Set in Oakland in the early 1970s. Concerns the Clarke family (all well over six feet tall, including the teenage girls and boy) and how the sudden death of a close family friend rocks their familial and individual foundations.
Seeking (all roles are available):
Age note: For the roles of Isabelle, Catherine, Christian and Nicholas, casting personnel will consider adults (18+) who can believably play the characters’ ages, as well as age-appropriate actors.
Isabelle Clarke:
Female, 17 (see “Age note” above). 6’0” tall. Eldest of the Clarke children. Intelligent, articulate, sharp and perceptive. Open, attractive and sexy in an understated (perhaps even unconscious) way. There is a streak of rebellion and mystery about her. Has had a large hand in raising her siblings and running the household.
Catherine Clarke:
Female, 15 (see “Age note” above). 6’2” tall. Third in line of the four Clarke children. Gangly and awkward; on the volleyball team because she’s tall, not because she’s good. Prone to attention/assurance-seeking fits of adolescent “I’m being wronged!” angst, but sweet-natured, sensitive and caring at heart; has not yet matured emotionally the way her body has.
Christian Clarke:
Male, 16 (see “Age note” above). 6’7” tall. Second-oldest of the Clarke children. Extremely athletic, boyish and boisterous; very much the strong-willed and competitive older brother who loves to mercilessly tease his younger siblings, but is not without caring and compassion.
Nicholas Clarke:
Male, 12 (see “Age note” above). 5’7” tall, and still growing. The baby; everybody’s lovable mascot. Young enough to still be somewhat wide-eyed and innocent, but growing increasingly interested in the familial (and sexual) politics of the household and the world at large.
Mr. John Clarke:
Man, mid – late 40s. 6’6” tall. The father. Lawyer and aspiring local politician. The glue that holds his family together. Patient, kind and loving, with a distinguished, All-American demeanor and a dreamy disposition. The kind of guy you’d want to be watching out for you as city comptroller.
Mrs. Anne Clarke:
Woman, early – mid 40s. 6’1” tall. The mother. A complicated woman; intelligent and sharp with a natural elegance, maybe a little vain. Ironic about herself and where she has found herself in her life, but even irony can’t always diffuse the underlying bitterness, rigidity and anger that she feels and routinely unleashes on her kids and husband. May have been in love with a female childhood friend who has suddenly died.
Russell James:
Man, early – mid 20s. 5’2” tall. Fresh out of college, and newly appointed as John Clarke’s potential campaign manager. Despite any underlying feelings of bitterness he has over being so short (and always having been so short), Russell is eager, affable and personable, a watchful and tactful people pleaser. Finds himself disarmed by Isabelle’s outlook and actions during his first trip to the Clarke household.
