BREAKDOWN
A note about casting (adopted from language with consent originally created by Kevin Kantor and Emily Traquin of Actors Theatre of Louisville):
Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the above character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.
We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities.
Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.
The Aurora Civic Center Authority (parent company to Paramount Theatre) is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All applications will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, familial status, sexual orientation, national origin, ability, age, or veteran status.

A content note from the Director:
“As the director, and in an effort to reduce harm wherever possible in the telling of this story, I want to be transparent that anyone who is cast in this show may be asked to portray a person of the Nazi party. This includes wearing the Swastika symbol and using the Nazi Heil salute in staging. Specific instances are noted below. There will also be Nazi symbols displayed within the physical setting of the show. Although this story is based on a real-life family, the musical is a fictional portrayal of this family and I want to encourage everyone to audition. The casting is not exclusive to the stereotypical representation of the characters of past productions.”
~Amber Mak
SEEKING:
MARIA RANIER: A woman who climbs trees and runs barefoot through the mountains. She obviously comes from a foundation of love and integrity. She is someone who has courage which isn’t to say that she is without fears. She struggles with understanding her place in society as she doesn’t always behave within the expectations of the culture in which she lives. Music is as essential to her as breathing. She gives of herself easily and always intends well.
CAPTAIN GEORG VON TRAPP: A retired Navy Captain and widower with 7 children. He is clearly lost without his wife so he has resorted to running his household and fathering like it is a Naval ship. Music opens him up and melts the shield he has put up. He is a man of integrity and puts his values above protecting his own fortune and status.
ELSA SCHRAEDER: A baroness and business woman who oversees a large estate. She is elegant but definitely self-serving. Her relationship to Captain Von Trapp is more for self-gain and money than for love. When she realizes that the Captain is not willing to side with the political power that will take over Austria, she leaves the Captain. She has no maternal instincts at all with the children.
MAX DETWEILER: A larger than life, flamboyant character that is quite self-serving. He will say and do whatever it takes to protect himself and the way in which he wants to live. He is not so much political as he is complacent.
FRANZ: The Butler - He has been with the family for a long time. He is on the side of wanting the German takeover. He will use the heil Nazi salute in the show.
FRAU SCHMIDT: The Housekeeper. She is a fortress and incredibly loyal to the family. She is against the takeover from Germany.
MOTHER ABBESS: She is a woman that is very observant, thoughtful and wise with great intuition and understanding. She has certainly lived a life in which she has seen much and is quite worldly. She has spirit but is reserved.
SISTERS OF THE ABBEY:
Sister Berthe- Mistress of Novices: She is a devout, strict, serious nun.
Sister Margaretta- Mistress of Postulants: She is a bit more joyous and bubbly with a sense of humor.
Sister Sophia- She is a follower and perhaps a bit more of a gossip. A sister that is more pious.
ROLF: 17. A Delivery boy who is fond of Leisl. He acts as though he is older and more worldly but he is still just a kid who is scared of what is going on in the world. He joins the Nazi army. He will dress as a Nazi and use the heil salute. Rolf also embraces dance as a form of storytelling.
LEISEL: 16. The oldest of the Von Trapp family. Has had to step in to help raise the other kids. She has a crush on Rolf but is naive to the political stakes of the time. She remembers her mom and is not so easily convinced of the idea of a “new mother”. Leisl not only sings but expresses herself in Dance as well.
FREIDRICH: 14. Shy and trying to figure out his place in the world. What does it mean to be a man?
LOUISA: 13. Ready to have a good time and quite the prankster of the family.
KURT: 10. Sensitive and easily hurt. So wants to please his father.
BRIGITTA: 9. The know it all of the family. Very observant and always speaks the truth no matter if it is appropriate or not.
MARIA: 7. Easily influenced by her older siblings. Quieter one of the whole group.
GRETL: 5. The baby who is so sweet and loves Maria.
