ABOUT THE SHOW-THE ROSE TATTOO
Set among a colony of Sicilian fisher-folk on the American Gulf Coast, The Rose Tattoo is the story of a woman for whom love is stronger than death. Serafina delle Rose is a restless widow whose intense and absorbing instincts for love drive everything before it. The figure of this extraordinary woman dominates the small town where she and her friends are living and embodies the exultation and danger of unbridled passion. Her story and those of the lover she chooses and the daughter she denies are sewn into a play of power, humanity and soaring emotion.
SERAFINA DELLE ROSE (Female, 35-50) - a local seamstress who is mourning the loss of her husband; religious, superstitious, and extremely passionate, she constantly wrestles with the societal pressures of the neighborhood, the challenges of raising her young and excited teenage daughter, and her newfound feelings toward Alvaro-a stranger who has just appeared in her life
ALVARO MANGIACAVALLO (Male, 25-40)- a Sicilian truck driver; clownish but good-hearted; works to support his family; crashes into Serafina’s life and he quickly develops feelings for her. Seeking all ethnicities.
ROSA DELLE ROSE (Female, 15)- Serafina’s daughter; she is young, bright, and beautiful and falling in love for the very first time. She feels both love and shame for her mother after the death of her father. Seeking all ethnicities.
JACK (Male, early 20s) – A young, polite sailor that Rosa falls in love with. He is a kind, honest man who loves Rosa and is determined to demonstrate this love to her mother, Serafina. Seeking all ethnicities.
ASSUNTA - (Female. 50-70)- Practices a type of fantastical medicine. She is the only woman in the neighborhood Serafina truly trusts. Seeking all ethnicities.
FATHER DE LEO (Male, 30-50)- A neighborhood Priest. Consoles Serafina after the death of her husband. A gentle severity, traditional. Seeking all ethnicities.
ESTELLE HOEHENGARTEN (Female, 30s)- A tough blackjack dealer from Texas who was having an affair with Serafina’s husband before his death. Seeking all ethnicities.
FLORA (Female, 30-50) – Described in William’s stage directions as being a “clown” with a “juvenile temperament.” She informs Serafina of her late husband’s infidelity after Serafina fails to alter her blouse in time. Seeking all ethnicities.
BESSIE (Female, 25-40)- Flora’s friend and counterpart, but proves to be the kinder of the two. Seeking all ethnicities.
MISS YORKE (Female,30-40) [May be doubled with Teresa] A teacher at Rosa’s high school. Is concerned for Rosa’s well being and reaches out to Serafina about letting Rosa attend the high school graduation. Seeking all ethnicities.
THE DOCTOR (Male, 30-50)- [May be doubled with The Salesman] A local doctor. Progressive in thought challenges the Priest’s views on death and burial. Seeking all ethnicities.
THE SALESMAN (Male, 30-50)- [May be doubled with The Doctor] A sly salesman who attempts to sell his goods to Serafina with his charisma. He reveals his hot-headed temper after Alvaro cuts him off on the highway with his truck. Seeking all ethnicities.
THE STREGA (Female, 40-60) – A neighborhood woman whose name translates to “witch” in Italian. Serafina fears that she is, in fact, a true witch, while Rosa argues that her mother is being superstitious. Tends to a goat that always strays into Serafina’s yard. Seeking all ethnicities.
GIUSEPPINA (Female, 30-50) – One of the neighborhood women. She gossips about Serafina’s actions with the other local women. Seeking all ethnicities. Seeking all ethnicities.

VIVI (FEMALE CHILD, 8-13) – One of the children of the neighborhood. Wild, innocent, and carefree. Seeking all ethnicities.
SALVATORE (MALE CHILD,8-13) – One of the children of the neighborhood. He is very amused by the neighborhood goat. Seeking all ethnicities.
BRUNO (MALE CHILD, 8-13)- One of the children of the neighborhood. Thoughtful and sensitive. Seeking all ethnicities.
