| Breakdown
Elizabeth (Bess) Borny: African-American woman, early - late 50's, Quilly's older sister, a strong, responsible, serious natured woman. Quilly McGrath: African-American woman, late 40's - mid 50's, Elizabeth’s younger sister, more fun loving, conniving, mischievous. Husband Witherspoon: African-American man, mid 20's - early 30's. Elizabeth’s roomer, from the South, innocent, not worldly. Lou Bessie Preston (Charmaine): African-American woman, mid 20's - early 30's. Husband’s love interest. Street wise and enjoying Harlem and the era. NON-EQUITY only. THE OLD SETTLER is a poignant sweet-natured comedy. The time is World War II, in Harlem, NY. A 55 year old spinster (called an Old Settler in those days) Elizabeth Borny, takes in a young male roomer, Husband Witherspoon, to help with rent. He has come from South Carolina to look for his girlfriend, Lou Bessie Preston. Also living with Elizabeth is her sister, Quilly McGrath, 53. An ominous cloud of tension hangs over the sisters’ relationship which is further exacerbated when Elizabeth and Husband take to liking each other. Elizabeth is old enough to be his mother! This carrying on exposes a 30 year old wound which, until now, only had a bandage. Now the wound can heal for the sisters. (Non-Equity Performers will be seen if time permits)
