BREAKDOWN
seeking
MRS. ELKINS – 51, African American Woman, building landlord, Widowed, Gloria’s grandmother and legal guardian. A woman trying her best but aware that she is constantly failing in the area that matters most, LOVE. Incredibly sensitive and resourceful but feels beaten down by life and so acts hard and cold for protection.
GLORIA – (Actor 18+ to play) 15 - African American Girl, abandoned by her mother, cared for by her grandmother. Wants so badly to be special and wanted. It feels as if she will do anything to be GLORIOUS.
CRUTCH – (Actor 18+ to play) 15 – African American Boy, Gloria’s wanna be boyfriend. He is at that critical moment when a boy wants to be a man, even though he is not exactly sure what it is to be a man yet.
LOUIS – 29 – African American Man, tormented war veteran, has recently moved from Alabama to Chicago and struggling to find his place in a world that has left him behind.
LUCILLE – 62 – African American Woman, Mrs. Elkins neighbor and family friend. She is funny, wise and boisterous. The type of person who would be the smartest person in the room, if she wasn’t so busy telling people how smart she is.
Play description (world premiere):
When a troubled war veteran moves into an apartment building in 1960s Chicago, the building's residents become caught in an emotional whirlwind that threatens to change their lives forever. Caught in the center is 16-year-old Gloria, the granddaughter of the building's landlady, whose frustration and loneliness spur her to desperate action.
