Breakdown

All actors must have an outstanding R.P. accent.

SEEKING:

BETTY JONES:
Female. (mid 30s-early 40s) Lead. Tour-de-force. Extremely smart, charismatic, funny, manipulative, fabulous, & intimidating. Has deep feelings underneath her bitter and sharp tongue. Refuses to apologize for being strong, saying what she means, and being honest.

COLONEL IVOR JONES:
Male. (mid-to-late 40s) Lead. Despite his military rank, now retired, does not exude tons of authority, at least not when his wife is around. Aristocratic roots but not wooden or alpha male. Ivor is smart, but not as quick as his wife. Actor should have a good sense of humor.

E. WALLACE WISTER:
Male. (early-mid 40s) Lead. Colonel & Betty’s neighbor. Appealing and tragic (in a funny way). His wife Muriel has been getting lots of ‘attention’ from the Colonel, and Betty calls her out publicly about it. Muriel demands an apology, and Wister has to negotiate between making his wife happy and his own sense of what is right.

GEOFFREY:
Male. (early-mid 50s) Supporting. Betty’s older brother; an attorney who is slick, smart, and is the resident expert on everything. Successful in business, shrewd, sardonic. Has gravitas, sober, quiet at times, until he’s engaged for his expertise. Great sense of humor. An alpha male.

ALICE MEYNE:
Female. (late 20’s, early 30s) Supporting. Betty’s good friend. Looks up to Betty for advice and is in awe of her directness and ability to take over a room. Alice is younger, sweet, wide-eyed, and perhaps a bit mousy--but also capable of surprising us. She is smart, proper, and likeable.

WOOTON:
Male. (early-mid 50s) Supporting. A man-servant. Served with the Colonel during the war. An oddball, nervous character with great attention to detail and routine. The ultimate in dignity. Actor should have a great sense of comedy.

LESCELINE:
Female. (20s-30s) Supporting. A maid. (Read for ALICE)
