At a late-night party, Sam and Jo entertain their friends with a round of Twenty Questions, and another round of drinks. When an unexpected guest and her mysterious companion arrive, the question "Who are you?" gains a whole new and desperate meaning.
Seeking (all roles are available unless otherwise specified):
Sam
Man, 30s-40s. Handsome in a boyish way. Intelligent, dutiful, caring and emotionally complex, but sometimes blocked and rigid. His wit is kind but sardonic.
Jo:
Woman, 30s-40s. Appears physically frail. Intellectually keen, quick, sharp-tongued, even vicious. Quite capable of wounding, but equally capable of being wounded. Her terminal illness makes it impossible for her to accept hypocrisy in those around her.
Fred:
Man, 30s-40s. On the cusp of being a washed-up athlete; still roughly handsome, but losing his game. Forceful, brutish, funny and even charming, but also has a streak of violence in him.
Edgar:
Man, 30s-40s. Urbane, ultra-sensitive, well-meaning and educated. Tries hard to be tolerant, even liberal, in his thinking. Feels strongly about loyalty and friendship. Sometimes weak.
Lucinda:
Woman, 30s-40s. Upper-class values. Attractive, intellectually sharp, but often intolerant. Sometimes vulnerable, even wounded, and it forces her to be brittle and defensive. Talks too much.
Carol:
Woman, 30s. New girlfriend of Fred’s; slightly younger than the rest. Warm-hearted, ripe, voluptuous brunette with an innate sexuality that she doesn’t have to work at. Dumb like a fox.
The following roles are cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary.
Oscar:
CAST. African American man, 50s. Very intelligent, watchful and shrewd. Generally open and accepting. Clear-headed, and always on his agenda. Trim, fit, sophisticated.
Elizabeth:
CAST. Woman, 60s. Stylish, elegant, sophisticated and quick-witted.
