SPT SPT Level 1 ($263/week, except first two rehearsal weeks are paid at $322/week). Housing and transportation provided per AEA contract. CRT is not able to negotiate contracts above the stated salary level.

Maximum two-minute contemporary monologue (1930 or later). Sides will be posted on our website prior to auditions for those selected to read from the script (www.chenangorivertheatre.org).

The Immigrant, by Mark Harelik. Rehearses July 29 – Aug 15, runs Aug 16 – Sept 8. Rural Central Texas, 1909.A young Russian-Jewish immigrant, newly arrived in America through the port of Galveston, pulls his banana cart into the hamlet of Hamilton.Fleeing the vicious pogroms of his homeland, he has sought refuge in the land of the free.Able to speak only Yiddish, alone in the middle of a staunchly Christian community, he begs for shelter.Over the next 30 years, he makes a home and raises a family in this tiny town.It’s the story of a young Russian-Jewish couple and the local couple that take them in, as religion meets religion, culture meets culture, fear meets fear, and love meets love.This is the true story of Haskell Harelik, “the immigrant.”
NOTE: Because all 4 actors age 30 years during the show, we will NOT be casting actors who are at either end of the age spectrum required for the roles.We’re looking for actors who look somewhere close to the middle of the age range they need to play.
Haskell Harelik: 28 to 38 years old, male; a Russian Jew who arrives in the small town of Hamilton, Texas in 1909 fleeing the pogroms. Haskell is a resourceful, natural salesman driven to create a secure life for his family in America.Charismatic, with a tender, poetic spirit. Must sacrifice aspects of his faith to succeed in this country.Terrific sense of humor.Speaks Yiddish.Ages from 19 to late 40’s during the story.Actor must be strong with dialects.
Leah Harelik: 25 to 35 years old, female.Haskell’s wife.Russian Orthodox Jew.Speaks Yiddish.Sensitive.Deeply connected to her Jewish faith.While terrified to begin a new life in America, her honesty and desire for connection helps her develop a lifelong friendship with
Ima Perry.Ages from 16 to mid 40’s during the story.Actor must be strong with dialects.
Milton Perry: 50 to 58 years old, male.Small town Texas banker with a dry sense of humor.Intelligent, rock-solid, and unyielding.Sees potential in Haskell, and becomes both a father figure and a friend who risks his reputation to help Haskell succeed.Ages from 40’s to 70’s during the story.
Ima Perry: 45 to 55 years old, female. A Calvary Baptist guided by an honest desire to do good in the world.Ima has a huge heart and persuasive spirit. Possess a quiet power over Milton that enlists him in her acts of goodwill.Enjoys the company of others.Great sense of humor.Ages from late 30’s to late 60’s during the story.
