THE GREAT LEAP, by Lauren Yee
Director: Natsu Onoda Power
SEEKING:
MANFORD – Male, Chinese-American, 18+ to play 17. Intense, scrappy, resourceful, runs into trouble, attacks the rim, with a ruthless crossover. We’re rooting for him. Not tall. more Allen Iverson than Jeremy Lin.
CONNIE – Female, Chinese-American, 25. Manford's cousin and UC Berkeley grad student. Level-headed, big picture. Deeply invested in Manford’s well-being. A Chris Paul/Klay Thompson type.
WEN CHANG – Male, Chinese, 43. Coach of Beijing University's men's basketball team. Observant, efficient, follows the rules. Sees an elegant beauty in the sport. Favors three pointers over aggressive inside shots. Tim Duncan would appreciate his energy. (His English is formal, but relatively unaccented.)
SAUL – Male, Jewish, 52. Coach of the University of San Francisco's men's basketball team. A shit-talking, shot-blocking, washed up Larry Bird. Three things in the world matter to him: his daughter, his players, and the sport of basketball
