Roles are available unless otherwise specified.
JAMIE: 32. Male. A journalist and Brooklynite. Smart, perceptive, relatively clean-cut and accomplished, he is also a little disappointed and sad. Somewhat emotionally closed off at the play’s beginning, Jamie’s journey is to be gradually chipped away at until he is laid bare.
FRANK: 32. Jamie’s childhood friend. A massage therapist who lives in Ithaca. A pierced, tattooed, butch gay man. His physical size and power don’t disguise his vulnerability and need. Though he arouses suspicion in some, ultimately his intentions are pure.
PAIGE: 34. Jamie’s girlfriend. An ex-dancer (who still looks like one) who is now a nutritionist. Compassionate, warm, and hard-working, she is still mourning the end of her dance career and seeks stability and safety. Jamie’s ambivalence is deeply painful to her.
DOUG: Early 60s. Jamie’s father. A Professor in Central New Jersey. A well-meaning and kind if somewhat absent-minded father. Doesn’t know how to express affection to his adult son but he does his best.
JOELLE: Late teens/ Early 20s. A college student and one of Paige’s clients. Very thin, anxious, and eager to please, with an angry streak. Joelle is recovering from an eating disorder and while she desperately wants Paige’s approval, she may not be ready to get better.
POLLY: 70s or 80s. Jamie’s former babysitter, now a nursing home resident. Her salt-of-the-earth quality is still very much present even though her memory is quickly fading. Patient, loving, and wise.
CATHY: CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. Early 60s. Jamie’s mother. A social worker in Central New Jersey, Cathy is garrulous and usually warm, sometimes verging on loopy. Though she loves her son, there is some distance between them – a kind of carefulness – that neither of them could explain.
