BREAKDOWN
El Gallo
Lead. Male 30-50 Any Ethnicity. Vibrant, full-bodied baritone, low A to high G (particularly strong in the lower range). Our narrator and a rugged, masculine leading man. Mysterious and magnetic. El Gallo must have tremendous charisma and be physically in good shape. Under his harsh exterior, he has surprising depths of compassion and honesty.
Luisa
Lead. Female 16 (seeking adult actor 18+) Any ethnicity. Legit, youthful soprano, can sing both very simply and with operatic flamboyance, high C. An exuberant teenager verging on womanhood, Luisa is an imaginative daydreamer and a romantic idealist. This role requires very strong acting and singing abilities. Must move well.
Matt
Lead. Male 18+ any ethnicity. Baritone or bari-tenor, low A to high G, strong musicianship and acting required. Very handsome. An innocent young man searching for love and adventure. Bright, naive and foolish at times. Must have a boyish wonder and charm. Requires very strong acting and singing abilities. Must move well.
Bellomy
Supporting. Male 40-60 Any Ethnicity
Baritone, low A to high G. Luisa’s father. A fastidious button salesman. Must have great comic timing.
Hucklebee
Supporting. Male 40-60 Any Ethnicity
Baritone or Bari-bass, stronger in low range, low A to high F. Matt’s father, He learned horticulture in the navy. He is comical and a curmudgeon, also a bit sloppy and boisterous. Must have great comic timing.
Henry The Old Actor
Supporting. Male 55+ Any Ethnicity
Ideally a classically trained actor. Not much singing, but must be able to sing in tune and hold harmonies. Must have terrific comedic timing and a fierce darkness. Must have a very strong stage presence.
The Mute
Supporting. Male or Female, 25-55 Any ethnicity
The Mute is an agile physical performer with adept mime skills and dance abilities. A non-singing, non-speaking character who remains on stage for the entire show, moving props and helping with transitions. Actor must be physically strong and dance training is a huge plus.
Mortimoer 'The Man Who Dies'
Supporting. Male 35-50 Any Ethnicity. This character can be any types, age, shape or size. Does not sing much, but must be able to sing in tune and hold harmonies. Must be adept with physical comedy, improv, miming, and have terrific comedic timing. A clownish character who specializes in dying in comically elaborate death scenes.
