BREAKDOWN

THE COLOR PURPLE

SEEKING:

Excellent Dancers and Singers. Ensemble will cover some Specialty Roles that include:

Church Ladies. (Doris, Darlene, and Jarene): Female, African-American, ages 35-55. Three characters with strong comedic timing, excellent vocal abilities, and the capacity to harmonize beautifully.

Squeak. Female, African-American, ages 20-30. She is Harpo's girlfriend after Sophia, an aspring singer who grows into her own.

Olivia. Female. African-American. 18-25. Olivia is Celie's daughter raised in Africa by Nettie. Ensemble may UNDERSTUDY for the following roles:

Celie-- African American, 20s to early 30s. Transforms from a timid, subdued young woman to a confident, independent individual. Powerful belt.

Nettie-- African American, 20s. Intelligent, determined, and loving younger sister of Celie. Strong belt.

Sofia—African American, 30s. Harpo’s wife. Strong, resilient, and outspoken. Strong comedic chops and a great belt.

Shug Avery-- African American, 30s to 40s. Mister’s long-time love, a singer who lives in Memphis. Charismatic and confident. Show-stopping, Bessie Smith-style singing voice.
