BREAKDOWN

Davis
Davis is an African American man in his early 50’s. Tall and thin with greying short hair, Davis has a PHD in Counselling Psychology, and has spent the last 20 years in a variety of roles in higher education; from counselling, teaching to community building. Davis was awarded the Champion of our Community Award by the LGBT Staff and Faculty Association of his University. He is soft spoken, with a hint of a southern drawl when he speaks. Understated, but very attentive and precise. Davis is patient and kind with others, but never complacent. Davis is quietly powerful. We can see and feel his thinking, while he maintains a debonair restraint, that is until the line is crossed, and Davis cannot just let it slide.

Jill
Jill is a 19 year old Sophomore at UMD. She is Caucasian, blond and a little short. She is a member of the Campus Conservatives and has volunteered to help get a Republican Governor elected in a Democrat state. Jill grew up in Maryland in an upper middle-class family. Jill is outspoken and honest about her frustration with the challenge of being a Conservative on a mostly Liberal campus. She is willing to listen, so she feels it’s only fair she be listened to in return. She comes from a long line of Republicans. While striving to be strong, Jill is nonetheless susceptible to the judgements of the others and is affected by their rebukes or counter-arguments, sometimes leaving her speechless and hurt, but never resigned. (note: local DC/Maryland actors are strongly encouraged to audition for this role)

Jim
Jim is in his early 60’s, Caucasian. He is professor of computer science at the university of Maryland. Jim is a right-leaning libertarian and a strong advocate of gun rights and privacy. A self-described geek, a “data” man, Jim is very intelligent, fast talking, quick witted and eccentric. Paunchy and dishevelled in appearance, he comes off as a bit of a conspiracy theorist- or is he a well-informed whistle-blower. He believes he has suffered professionally, because of his political views and because he rocks the boat.

Maria:
Maria is student at the university of Maryland just finishing her degree. She is early twenties, Latina. She is studying Latin American and African American studies. From Baltimore, she is from a low-income family and is the first member of her family to go to college. Maria is an articulate and passionate communicator. An engaged student activist, Maria is a self-proclaimed Socialist and a bit of a social justice warrior.

The following roles have been PRECAST

Brett:
Role CAST. 40’s Caucasian male. Brett is a Montrealer of Irish and French-Canadian descent. Brett and Alex are co-creators and co-authors of The Assembly series with playwright Annabel Soutar. Brett is driven and energetic and is listening as an investigative playwright to the participants, keenly aware of the need to create an interesting piece of theatre with the language recorded at the dinner. Brett may forgo a more neutral host position and express his bias if necessary to either protect his values or to get the conversation going.

It is important to note that Brett and Alex don’t have the same approach to dealing with people they disagree with. Brett will confront or challenge, and Alex will attempt to understand.
Brett and Alex have known each other since they were 16 years old.

Alex:
Role Cast. 40’s Caucasian male. Alex grew up and lives in Montreal, Canada. He is a first-generation immigrant born in Italy to defected Romanian parents who eventually settled in Canada when Alex was about a year old. Brett and Alex are co-creators and co-authors of The Assembly series with playwright Annabel Soutar. Brett and Alex are co-hosts of the dinner that brings the four participants together. Alex has been doing documentary theatre for 20 years with his wife Annabel. He is curious, not too worried about the clock, may perhaps find too many things interesting at once. This can make Alex a foil to Brett’s more driven investigative attitude.

It is important to note that Brett and Alex don’t have the same approach to dealing with people they disagree with. Brett will confront or challenge, and Alex will attempt to understand
