JULIA AUGUSTINE - Female, Black, 30s-40s, a new arrival to this community, she is a seamstress with an eighth-grade education; longs for friendship and family ties, but her ten-year illicit relationship with Herman has made her an outcast among her people.
MATTIE - Female, Black, 30s, one of Julia's new neighbors, she is struggling to support herself and her daughter on subsistence jobs while her common-law husband is away at sea.
LULA GREEN - Female, Black 40s-50s, Julia's other neighbor, Lula is deeply (if unconventionally) spiritual and fiercely protective of her son.
FANNY JOHNSON - Female, Black, 50+, Julia's landlady; deeply concerned with being seen as a high-class representative of her race, often by distancing herself from those who may not pass muster.
ANNABELLE - Female, White, 30s, Herman's sister; she might be graceful if she were not ashamed of her height (she is over 5'9); she is nervous and fearful in this strange atmosphere; the burden of her mother's social expectations weighs heavily on her.
HERMAN'S MOTHER - Female, White, 50+, born to poor sharecroppers, she has risen above her background - though nowhere near as far as she'd like; to compensate, she tries to assume the airs of quality and clings to the comfort of white supremacy.
TEETA- Female, Black, around 8, Mattie's daughter.
PRINCESS - Female, White, 6, her parents run an ice cream shop.
HERMAN - Male, White, 40s, a baker, and Julia's long-time lover; strong, working-class, torn between his love for Juilia and his duty (both financial and filial) to his mother.
NELSON GREEN- Male, Black, 20s-30s, Lula's adopted son, he is a rough-looking, muscular fellow with a soft voice and a bittersweet sense of humor.
BELL MAN - Male, White, 30s-40s, a peddler, friendly on the surface; he extends credit to most of the women in the neighborhood and expects gratitude and sexual favors in return.

THE POET- Male, 40-60, A poet who dresses in rags and has a sense of tattered handsomeness. He needs and wants everything and every woman but has never quite lost his sense of humor. G2-F4
LUNDANDA- Female, 30-40, wife of wives to the Wazir of Police, born a princess in her own right in a neighboring kingdom. Rich, bright, and bored with her life. She takes a romantic interest in the Poet and works to bring him to power. F#3-B4
MARSINAH - Female, 15-25, The Poet's beautiful daughter. She has lived her life in the streets but has maintained her innocence and retains a sense of humor. She falls in love with the Mansa. Hungry and ragged.
THE MANSA- Male, 20-30, The newly acceded leader to the throne. A handsome and romantic youth who falls in love instantly with Marsinah but hides his identity. C3-Ab4
WAZIR OF POLICE- Male, 30-45, The new Commander of the Royal Camel Corps and appointed executioner in Timbuktu. Androgynous, murderous, and corrupt. A2-F#4
M'BALLAH OF THE RIVER- Male, 55-70, A king among pirates and brigands. He has traveled to Timbuktu to undo a curse that lost his son. Imposing, tall, fierce.
ENSEMBLE- Citizens of Timbuktu; Vendors and Merchants; River Pirates; Guards; Antelopes; Birds in Paradise.

KING - 36, Male, he is the spiritual son of King Hedley from Seven Guitars; he is engaged in life and death struggles with a scar to prove it.
RUBY - 61, King’s mother and blues singer.
TONYA - 35, King’s girlfriend who is pregnant and wants to have an abortion because she does not want to bring a baby into this corrupt, crazy world.
STOOL PIGEON - 65, a harmonica player also seen in Seven Guitars; he is now a newspaper-collecting history carrier.
MISTER- 30s, the son of Red Carter from Seven Guitars; a cocky street punk with a streak of
kindness.
ELMORE- an old hustler who exudes an air of elegance and confidence born of his many years
wrestling with life; knows the secret of King's true patrimony.
