Equity actors for roles in SWEENEY TODD (see breakdown).
Local actors are encouraged to submit.
We are seeking fully vaccinated and boosted actors for this production.
RCT has engaged with a qualified Intimacy Director to work with all actors. The Intimacy Director will work with the actors to create moments of kissing and/or embracing that work within the actors’ boundaries. We may discover other moments of casual or familial intimacy between characters (e.g. casual touching, embracing) that work within the boundaries of each actor.
INSTRUCTIONS
Please prepare a brief cut of a song in the style of the show along with a monologue. You may also use the accompaniment at https://www.rubbercitytheatre.com/auditions--employment.html . BREAKDOWN
In reference to the character descriptions - most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with the he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that are in the following descriptions. But, however limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. As an ADA compliant theatre, we welcome performers of all abilities and will make all reasonable accommodations in order to cast performers, regardless of disability, in any role possible. Seeking:
All members cast with Ensemble will play the chorus and double as the smaller one-time roles; bird seller, Jonas Fogg, etc.
Sweeney Todd: A wrongfully imprisoned barber seeking to right the wrongs committed against him. He is Johanna's father, singularly focussed on taking bloody revenge. Our story's tormented protagonist. Gender: Male Age: 35 to 55. Vocal range top: Gb4. Vocal range bottom: F2. Note: This role requires enacting the murder of many other characters; multiple kisses and possible embraces with MRS. LOVETT; shaving the faces of many characters; holding the body of BEGGAR WOMAN; having their throat slit by TOBIAS.
Mrs. Lovett: An entrepreneurial and amoral meat pie shop owner. She falls in love with Todd and turns his desire for revenge into a profitable business venture. Gender: Female. Age: 35 to 50. Vocal range top: E5.Vocal range bottom: G3. Note: This role requires familial levels of touch with TOBIAS; multiple kisses and possible embraces with TODD; enacting the murder of the JUDGE; screaming.
Anthony Hope/Ensemble: A naive and youthful sailor returning to London. He helps Todd return to London and unexpectedly falls in love with Johanna. Gender: Male. Age: 20 to 30. Vocal range top: F4. Vocal range bottom: Bb2. Note: This role requires multiple kisses and passionate embraces with JOHANNA.
Beggar Woman/Ensemble: A deranged and schizophrenic woman who harbors a dark, surprising secret. Gender: Female. Age: 35 to 50. Vocal range top: F5. Vocal range bottom: Ab3. Note: This role requires having their throat slit by TODD; being held (while dead) by TODD.
Judge Turpin/Ensemble: A lecherous public official who portrays himself as a sanctimonious authoritarian. He takes advantage of his position in the city and is responsible for imprisoning Todd. Gender: Male Age: 40 to 65. Vocal range top: Gb4. Vocal range bottom: E2. Note: This role requires being the perpetrator of sexual assault; having their face shaved by TODD; having their throat slit by TODD; being murdered by MRS. LOVETT. This role also requires the depiction of pedophilia and desired incest (toward JOHANNA, their ward).
Johanna/Ensemble: A spritely girl, full of innocence, constantly yearning for freedom. Todd's long-lost daughter and Turpin's ward. Gender: Female. Age: 18 to 21. Vocal range top: A5. Vocal range bottom: Bb3. Note: This role requires being the victim of sexual assault; multiple kisses and passionate embraces with ANTHONY.
Beadle/Ensemble: A pompous public official. He is deeply loyal to the corrupt Turpin. Gender: Male. Age: 35 to 55. Vocal range top: D5. Vocal range bottom: D3. Note: This role requires being an accomplice in a scene of sexual assault.
Tobias/Ensemble: A poor youngster apprenticed to Pirelli. He finds a surrogate family in Todd and Lovett. Gender: Male or Female. Age: 12 to 18.Vocal range top: Ab4. Vocal range bottom: Bb2. Note: This role requires familial levels of touch with MRS. LOVETT; slitting the throat of TODD.
Prilleli/Ensemble: A flamboyant Italian rival barber; a charlatan with a secret past. Gender: Male or Female. Age: 30 to 45. Vocal range top: C5. Vocal range bottom: B2. Note: This role requires an extended scene where they are murdered by TODD; shaving the faces of other characters.
