Seeking (all roles are available unless otherwise specified):
Priest (aka Super Fly):
African American man, mid 20s – mid 30s. Extremely sexy. His sexual energy is smooth and powerful. The very personification of cool. Fearless, with a great sense of style. At home in the Harlem streets of the 1970s. Described as “a drug pusher, a stick-up artist and a child of the ghetto”, he truly beats the system, outsmarting the corrupt police force so that he can break free and start a new life. Though some may find him despicable, he is the unlikely hero. Actor must have the stature and physique to play this iconic, wide-brimmed-hat- and chinchilla-coat-wearing style. Must be a great actor and sing well. ACTOR MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH MUSIC OF THE PERIOD, AND BE ABLE TO SING THIS MUSIC WITH GREAT PASSION AND STYLE, AND BE ABLE TO MOVE.
Georgia:
African American woman, 20s. HAS GREAT BEAUTY AND SEXUAL ENERGY. Fabulous singer – the headline performer at Harlem Nightclub. She is the feminine complement to Priest’s prowess – gentle and loving, sexy and smart, courageous – she matches him in sexuality, fearlessness and heart. College-educated, she is “the little shining light of hope” in Priest’s dark life that guides him to freedom and a new life. Performer must be a strong actress, able to handle the sole female lead in the show (book scenes and solos). ACTRESS MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH MUSIC OF THE PERIOD, AND BE ABLE TO SING THIS MUSIC WITH GREAT PASSION AND STYLE, AND BE ABLE TO MOVE.
Fat-Freddy:
African American man, 20s. Physically round and heavyset. A lovable idiot, but with heterosexual passion. An innocent, in over his head in the underground drug trade of 1970s Harlem. Earnest and childlike; very heartful and lovable. Passionately in love with a prostitute, and ultimately risks his life to stand by her. Subject of the well-known song, “Freddie’s Dead”. ACTOR MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH MUSIC OF THE PERIOD, AND BE ABLE TO SING THIS MUSIC WITH GREAT PASSION AND STYLE, AND BE ABLE TO MOVE.
Scatter:
African American man, 60s. Priest’s mentor; gave him entrée into the world of the Mafia. Very much like a father to Priest. Now retired from the drug trade and runs a restaurant/nightclub in Harlem. Warm and fatherly toward Priest, he is also described as a “ruthless individual [who would] kill you for spitting, he is nothing to mess with”. ACTOR MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH MUSIC OF THE PERIOD, BE ABLE TO SING THIS MUSIC WITH GREAT PASSION AND BE ABLE TO MOVE.
Riordan:
Caucasian man, late 40s – late 50s. Police officer in charge of Street Investigations. Appears to be the typical, white-collar police executive, but he is also the kingpin of the Harlem Drug trade. Capable of great power and command. ACTOR MUST BE ABLE TO SING, AS WELL AS HAVE SOME MOVEMENT ABILITY.
Eddie:
CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. African American, late 20s - mid 30s. Wiry, fast-eyed. Priest’s partner in the drug trade and “main boy” out of a family -- fifty strong -- out on the streets working for them. Eddie lives the “street life”: thieving, selling drugs, shooting craps. Volatile and vengeful. Does not support Priest’s plan to get out, and ultimately betrays him. Role requires a great actor, able to move with great style and rhythm. ACTOR MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH MUSIC OF THE PERIOD AND BE ABLE TO SING THIS MUSIC WITH GREAT PASSION.
