BREAKDOWN

A contemporary comedy explodes into a musical fantasia in the first collaboration between two of America’s great theatre artists: Tony Award® winners David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly, Flower Drum Song) and Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home). Soft Power rewinds our recent political history and plays it back through a Chinese lens: a future, beloved East-meets-West musical. A Chinese executive visiting America finds himself falling in love with a good-hearted U.S. leader, as the power balance between their two countries shifts following the 2016 election. As original as it is topical, Soft Power overflows with the romance, laughter, and cultural confusions of the golden age of Broadway. Hwang and Tesori have created one of the most eagerly anticipated new works of the year.

*UNDERTSUDY ONLY* FOR 'ZOE/HILLARY CLINTON': Late 20's/30’s. Female. To understudy: ZOE: The younger American mistress of Xue, a Chinese film executive. An actress. Poised, confident, intelligent. Quick witted. Outspoken. She anticipates that men will have difficulty taking her seriously, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to stand for it. This role will double with HILLARY CLINTON: A presidential candidate. Over-prepared, over-qualified, and over-worked to the point of exhaustion. Capable, responsible, incredibly intelligent and well-spoken, but has to dumb down her words and actions to appeal to the masses. When she crosses paths with Xue, she’s relieved to finally meet someone around whom she’s actually able to be herself. A role for a true triple threat; must be a skilled actress, singer, and solo dancer. VOCAL RANGE – Soprano with belt (F#3 to F#5, optional A5)
