BREAKDOWN

SYNOPSIS:
This neo-romantic, lyrical musical love story, based on the historical figures involved, tells of a severely ill-woman's journey from a psychiatric patient to a renowned psychoanalyst. Sabina's quest to find a cure for her madness, and the hero who will save her, ignites a love triangle of mythic proportions between her, Carl Jung, and Sigmund Freud.

SEEKING

SABINA SPIELREIN: Female-identifying, 20s, Russian. Caucasian. A dark, fragile and haunted young woman who awakens her own powerful inner strength. Starts the play at age 18 and the musical focuses primarily on her life as a young adult (although by the end she ages to her early 30s). The highly educated daughter of a prosperous Russian/Jewish family. Admitted to a Swiss asylum with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and suffers with severe mental illness throughout her life. She is also a brilliant medical student and pioneering feminist psychoanalyst. VOCAL RANGE: A3 to F5. A soprano with nice lower notes.

CARL JUNG: Male-identifying, 30s/40s, Swiss. Caucasian. A brilliant, senior staff member at the Burgholzli Asylum and a rising star in the psychiatric world. His successful psychoanalysis of Sabina brings him to the attention of Sigmund Freud. VOCAL RANGE: G2 to F4. A baritenor with some nice higher notes but strongest in the lower range. Historical figure was 6’1”.

SIGMUND FREUD: Male-identifying, 50s/60s, Austrian. Caucasian. Both charming and tough as nails. The father of modern psychology, he fears this new science will fall prey to anti-Semitic slander and he sees Jung as a potential gentile heir. VOCAL RANGE: A2 to Eb4. A baritenor with a solid upper range.

We welcome actors of all abilities, ethnicities and gender identities to submit.
