Please prepare a brief contemporary monologue. In addition, please prepare a brief song (to be sung a cappella) in the style of the play’s music (examples at

Seeking (all roles are available):
Viola:
African American woman, late 20s – mid 30s. Donis’s younger sister. Struggling between her personal desires and her responsibility to her family. The play is largely about her struggle for balance between the two. Actor should be able to sing solos.
Donis:
African American man, mid – late 30s. Viola’s older brother. Loving and sensitive mentally challenged man who adores his younger sister and main caretaker, Viola. Actor should be able to sing (mostly with others).
Papa Keith:
African American. Character appears from late 30s to late 60s. Viola and Donis’s grandfather, Mona and Zechariah’s father. Resourceful and driven. His main interest is in his family’s transcendence. Actor must be able to sing and move well.
Mona:
African American. Character appears from age 10 to early 20s. Viola and Donis’s mother. In this play, Mona is seen as a young girl frightened by her prophetic dreams and as a young woman eager to please her parents. Actor must be able to sing and move well.
Dolly:
African American. Character appears from 40s to late 60s. Viola and Donis’s grandmother, Mona and Zechariah’s mother. The matriarchal figure in the family. Concerned about the toll their familial gifts may have on her children and grandchildren. Actor must be a strong singer and able to move.
Zachariah:
African American, mid – late teens. Viola and Donis’s uncle. Highly intelligent and somewhat secretive young man, eager to please his grandfather. Actor must be able to sing and move.
James:
African American, mid - late 20s. James voluntarily tutors Donis. He is a caring but confused man who drinks to escape his feelings.
