BREAKDOWN

REBELLIOUS, by Mike Wiley

Seeking:

Berta – (Female, Black, early 20s): Berta hails from a small country town in rural NC. She is extremely intelligent but naïve. Each day and every interaction at Bennett contribute to her maturity and truly finding herself and her voice. Berta is a freshwoman and has a boyfriend studying out of state, who doesn’t see her full potential. We follow Berta’s memories from her old age, back to her early college days.

Spicy/ Mother – (Female, Black, early 20s): Spicy is just like her name -- very outspoken and driven by emotion. Hailing from Baltimore, she is bold and talks smack extremely well. She is an athlete who is clear about who she is and is not afraid to express herself. She is best friends with Geneva but has a contentious relationship with Gloria.

Geneva/Mother – (Female, Black, early 20s): The confident Geneva is a bit boy-crazy and is planning on getting her “Mrs.” degree before she graduates. Geneva is smart -- sometimes outspoken -- but cautious when it comes to upsetting the status quo. She is extremely clever and levelheaded. Geneva and Spicy are best friends; she is an upper-class woman from the deep South, who has seen racial violence first hand.

Gloria/Mother (Female, Black, early 20s): Ahead of her time in her thoughts and concepts about the world. She is a writer for the school newspaper and understands the power of the pen. Her relationship with the other ladies can be contentious, due to her unacknowledged classism. She is an intellectual who is frustrated with what’s going on in the world. Gloria is studious and proper and at one point is mistaken for a white woman by a waitress at the Woolworth’s counter.

Child – (Female, Black, 6-10 years old): An inquisitive child who asks Berta about her life and the story of the Bennett Belles. She is inspired by their activism and heroism to take charge of her future as well.

White Man – (Male, White, 30s-50s) Bennett Board Member, Bus Driver, Store Managers, Shopper, Reporter, Museum Visitor, Policeman, Mob. Facile with a variety of accents and physical choices to play a wealth of characters.

White Woman - (Female, White, mid 20s – 30s): Museum Tourist, Operator, Greensboro College Student, Waitress, Counter Girl, Mob. Facile with a variety of accents and physical choices to play a wealth of characters in fast-moving production.

Black Man – (Male, Black, mid 20s – late 30s): Reginald, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Basketball Coach, Train Porter, Shopper, Counter Customer, Berta’s Grandson, Lawyer, and NC A&T Four. Facile with a variety of accents and physical choices to play a wealth of characters in fast moving production.

Black Woman – (Female, Black, mid 40s – mid 60s): Dr. Willa Player and Tour Guide. Strong and intelligent, Dr. Player is an inspiration to her students, a resilient leader, and a patient teacher. The Tour guide shares the story of the Sit-in movement with clarity, inspiration, and rooted wisdom.
