SEEKING

:

Coalhouse Walker Jr.: 25 to 35. A proud and talented pianist. A Black man who believes that he can take part in the new America and will be treated fairly. Able to move. Piano playing is helpful but not essential. Baritone. Low G to High A.

Sarah: 20 to 25. A Washwoman. Sarah is a young Black woman with a strong will to live and love, fueled by an innocent spirit. Falls deeply in love with Coalhouse after much resistance. Lyric Soprano, with strong mix. Low G# to High F#.

Mother: 30 to 40. The consummate wife and mother, a kind woman who is gentle, compassionate, optimistic, and accepting of others. Lyric Soprano/Mezzo, with strong mix. Low G to High F#.

Father: 30 to 45. Mother's professionally successful husband. He fancies himself an amateur explorer; he is commanding and enjoys being the family breadwinner and a traditionalist. He’s cautious and resistant to change. Baritone. Low A to High F.

Younger Brother: 20 to 25. Mother's younger brother. He is an erratic and passionate soul, a firework waiting to be lit. He likes change in society and is Influenced greatly by Goldman's teachings. Tenor/Baritone. B to High F#.

Little Boy (Edgar): 8 to 12. Mother and Father's son. He is curious with inexplicable clairvoyance. An earnest boy who has grown up in privilege. Open-hearted to people that are different from him and has the precocious innocence of youth. Voice Not Changed yet, Alto/Mezzo. E to D.

Grandfather: 60 to 70. Mother's patrician father. He is a retired professor and easily irritated by nearly everything. Speaking Role.

Tateh: 35 to 45. A Latvian immigrant. He wears the trials and tribulations of his past on his sleeve but remains optimistic that he will be successful. He’s creative and full of genuine drive and heart. He lives for his little daughter, who gives him his dream. Baritone/Tenor Bb to High F#.

Little Girl: 7 to 10. Tateh's daughter. A vulnerable child in a brand-new home, she has lost her mother and is guarded and shy. She clings to her father. Mezzo Soprano. C to Bb.

Booker T. Washington: 45 to 55. Brilliant Black social activist. He is an eloquent and articulate gentleman, proving that Black Americans can lead exemplary lives. Baritone. D to Eb.

Emma Goldman: 35 to 45. Social activist. Originally from Russia, she is a leader and a fearless advocate for the oppressed. Alto. B to D.

Evelyn Nesbit: 18 to 21. Vaudeville performer. Thrust into the limelight after the high-profile murder of her lover, the entire world is on her stage. Mezzo/Soprano, Belter. B to D.

Harry Houdini: 25 to 35. The famous magician, originally from Hungary. With notable physical ability, he stands as a symbol of the 'American Dream.'Tenor/High Baritone. E to High G.

Young Coalhouse Jr: 4 to 6. Innocent and pure. Son of Coalhouse and Sarah. This role appears briefly at the end of the play and has no lines or songs. Rehearsals will be very minimal, but you must be available for all of tech week and performances.
