BREAKDOWN

Our Production of PERICLES takes a new look at an old play about healing. With a small cast of five, we aim to create a world of storytelling wonder and intimacy that reflects this fabulous text. The composition of this play is generally agreed to be shared by Shakespeare and at least one other writer, and the action travels over land and sea, across ages and lands, through endlessly surprising events. It is tonally comic and tragic, melancholy, troubling, and ultimately affirming of us all.

We are seeking three actors (any gender) to join our principal ensemble. All Actors will shift and share roles often. Our process is collaborative and experimental and much of how we present the play will be developed in rehearsal by the group. See below for representative character breakdowns.

Please note that these roles are open to actors of any identity whatsoever. Though the characters are traditionally gendered, our production of this play will treat all roles as available to any of the humans in the production.

REPRESENTATIVE ACTOR TRACKS (note that these will evolve in our development process):

Track 1: Thaisa and others.
Track 2: Marina and others.
Track 3: Lysimachus and others.
Track 4 [CAST]: Pericles and others
Track 5 [CAST]: Dionyza and others

CHARACTERS (note that these will evolve in our development process):

Thaisa: Thaisa is the wife of Pericles, the person who appears to be dead and yet is miraculously reborn and restored to family.

Marina: Marina is smart, resourceful, and responds with energy to endlessly difficult surprises and threats. This is a person who somehow always finds a way. The child of Pericles and Thaisa, could Marina be wiser than they are?

Lysimachus: Lysimachus is the mysterious governor of Mytilene; Lysimachus takes questionable actions and their motives are obscure. It is challenging to evaluate how we should respond to this person. Good? Bad? Perhaps Lysimachus changes or discovers new things during the action.

Pericles [CAST]: the Prince of Tyre. Pericles is young at the beginning of the story; he travels, suffers, succeeds and fails, and at the end after many years he is much changed.

Dionyza [CAST]: wife of the Governor of Tarsus. Dionyza runs the household and all around it; a complicated figure who is not nice, Dionyza acts out of love for purposes she believes are best.
