Breakdown

Founded in April 2013, The Brewing Dept. is a nonprofit theater collective that fosters a supportive and collaborative community dedicated to giving new works and new ideas about old works a substantive developmental life through workshops and productions. The Brewing Dept. held a reading of this version of Shakespeare’s play in November 2014. TBD's upcoming production continues the development of director Thomas Kapusta’s vision for a visceral and thrilling OTHELLO.

Othello: 20s-30s, African American; a military man with an innate sense of poetry.

Brabantio: 20s-30s (but could read older), any ethnicity; a father set in his ways and worldview, unwilling to give up what's his. The actor playing this part will also play Gratiano, a Venetian gentleman.

Emilia: 20s-30s, any ethnicity; a kind and loyal woman whose jocularity stems from an unhappy life.

Cassio: 20s-30s, any ethnicity; a pleasant, popular man with an aristocratic sense of entitlement.
