BREAKDOWN

SYNOPSIS: February 25, 1964 - a great day for boxing fans. Twenty-two-year-old Cassius Clay has just won the world heavyweight boxing title. Instead of hitting the town, Clay celebrates in a Miami hotel room with three very close friends – activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and football star Jim Brown. This fictional account of a real night imagines what might have happened in that tiny hotel room located in the downtrodden, black side of town. As the Civil Rights movement stirs outside, and the melody of “A Change is Gonna Come” hangs in the air, four men will emerge from that one night ready to define a new world.

SEEKING:

[CASSIUS CLAY aka MUHAMMAD ALI] Male, early 20s, African American. A tall (preferably over 6’), handsome man with an athletic build. A breakout star on the rise with a chip on his shoulder. Believes God has bestowed him with divine skill. Confident in his abilities, he has just won the world heavyweight boxing title from Sonny Liston. On this night, he is moments before joining the Nation of Islam. Impressionable and eager, brash and arrogant, but not without his doubts.

[JIM BROWN] Male, 20s to early 30s, African American. A star running back for the Cleveland Browns who holds every rushing and touchdown record in the NFL. A towering, intimidating presence on and off the field. Must have an athletic build. He is self-assured and a straight shooter with a dry sense of humor. He has an incredibly sharp wit, though he likes to keep that aspect of his personality under wraps. Hates nothing more than condescension. As mature and confident as Clay is brash.

[SAM COOKE] Male, early 30s, African American. A superstar singer-songwriter and true entertainer who enjoys success. A savvy entrepreneur working the system, though conflicted about his role in the industry. Razor sharp, scrappy, and forthright. He is Malcolm’s intellectual equal, though he prefers to keep his intelligence hidden behind smooth talk, audacious style, and deft humor. He radiates sex appeal with a confident, womanizing swagger. Vocally opposes Malcolm’s absolutist activism. Singing required. Prefer someone who can play acoustic guitar well or someone with an aptitude to learn basic chords.

[MALCOLM X] Male, late 30s, very light complexioned African American. A fiery preacher in the Nation of Islam who has recently been silenced for his negative comments about the death of President Kennedy. A natural leader – intelligent, passionate, with his share of doubts and troubles. He is a devout Muslim yet he has a dry sense of humor that surprises people. Malcolm shares a strong fraternal bond with Cassius. He is the elder statesman of this group of friends.

[KAREEM] Male, mid 30s. A senior member of the Fruit of Islam. A security guard and a devout follower of Elijah Muhammad. Intimidating and menacing in both size and presence. He is a man of business and not to be trifled with in any regard. He can suck the air out of the room with a single word or glance. Has sworn to protect Malcolm; ready to fight.

[JAMAAL] Male, mid 20s. A newer member to the Fruit of Islam. He is a security guard and works under Kareem as an apprentice. He is youthful, funny, and easily star struck. He is like everyone’s kid brother – green and curious. However, he is not clownish.
