BREAKDOWN
SEEKING:
KEVIN - (Male, early 20s, East Asian or Southeast Asian) – In his second or third year of college and has never left the US. He is gay, young, idealistic, earnest, and honest. At the start of the play he is guarded but never jaded. He is secretly a romantic but doesn’t let that out to the guys he meets. He is still finding himself in life. Previously, he thought he was headed for medical school but is a budding writer (though he doesn’t know this yet).
SAMMY – (Male, early 20s, Middle Eastern) – Grew up being the practical brother and is now only coming to terms with his artistic side. He is young, naïve, hungry for new experiences, and possesses a lust for life. He starts the day excited about his sexual awakening with Kevin, but he carries the trauma of being a refugee from a country at war and a migrant on a dangerous journey. He is soulful and has experienced great loss. *Helpful, but not essential, if actor speaks Arabic*
NOTE FOR THE ROLES OF VINCENT AND REMBRANDT: We are seeking versatile, inventive, empathetic, playful actors game to make bold choices to play multiple roles. These characters are integral in every way to the play.
VINCENT – (Male, late 20s to late 30s, Middle Eastern or Latinx) – He tries to be the level-headed older brother to Sammy, but is prone to bouts of mania and anxiety. He has an urgency that borders on mania. He needs constant attention and is emotionally needy. He is draining to be around. As A Narrator, he is the “perfectionist one”.
REMBRANDT – (Male, mid 40s to late 50s, Black/African American) – Friendly, avuncular. He goes into debt later in life, so he is the guy who buys everyone drinks and whose wife is annoyed that he’s not more careful with money. As A Narrator, he is “the romantic one”. He’s lived a full life and had many adventures.
