BREAKDOWN
ABOUT THE PLAY: During a hot summer at a fundamentalist church camp in Texas, an idealistic young counselor works to shepherd the campers in the girls’ cabin through a delicate phase of self discovery, only to be confronted with challenges to her own faith. The young women find themselves crashing into the uneasy tension between obedience and rebellion in a culture that is obsessed with their sexual purity.
SEEKING:
Autumn (17) – Female, Latinx. Proud of her Chaco tan lines, and extensive wolf shirt collection. Pro napper. Learning how to play the drums. Wears a purity ring to avoid her queerness.
Jean Ruby (17) – Female, White. Varsity Cheerleader. Flyer. Loves starting chants in the lunchroom. Unashamedly messy cries during the camp worship sessions. Always comes down to the front during the alter call.
Luna (17) – Female, Multi-racial with Black heritage. Wants to pursue an MFA in Studio Art. Maternally first generation American. Frequents the Craft Shack. Bucket list item is to play paintball with the boys. New to church, not spirituality.
Rachel (15) – Female, White. Earnest. Avid baker. Home-schooled, a part of a Co-Op. In the middle of six siblings. Wakes up early every morning to spend time with Jesus. She’s fasting during this week of camp.
Trina (17) – Female, Black. Varsity Volleyball. Setter. D1 NCAA bound. Signed up for all physical activities at camp: archery, paddle boarding, soccer, you name it. Finding it hard to let “Jesus take the wheel”.
Becca (22) – Female, White. Senior girls camp counselor. Wants to be the best camp counselor ever. Just graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelors in Special Education. Engaged to Adrian. Unraveling.
Adrian (28) – Male, Latinx. Senior boys camp counselor. The worship leader of his church, aka rockstar. His Christian boy band almost became something big. They have an EP. Almost studied with Hillsong in Australia.
Rachel’s Dad – Male, White. A grieving widow. Newly single parent of six children. An orthodontist. Elder in the church. Self-Righteous, honey dipped traditionalist, but not a villain (***think Charles Esten***).
