MERCY
A World Premiere by Adam Szymkowicz

SYNOPSIS:
After the untimely death of his wife, Orville tries to get on with his life. His father is taking care of the baby, while his boss aggressively tries to comfort him. However, everything changes for Orville when he inadvertently meets the man responsible for his wife's death.

ORVILLE MARKS
Male, mid-thirties to early forties. A NYC, mid-level executive, Orville’s pregnant wife was recently killed by a drunk driver. The baby survived. Now, Orville is desperately trying to maneuver the foreign landscape of his new life as the single parent of a newborn and come to terms with the injustice of his wife’s death. He is intelligent, clever and circumspect, with a dry sense of humor. The play is a funny drama, so comedic and dramatic skills are equally important.
WALTER MARKS
Role CAST. Male, mid-sixties. Walter is Orville’s father. He’s a retired widower, who was married to Orville’s mother for 43 wonderful years. Walter is caring for his newborn grand-daughter and helping Orville deal with the life-shattering effects of his wife’s sudden death. Walter is the seasoned voice of reason delivered with love and wry, no-nonsense honesty.
BRENDA JAMES
Female, mid-thirties to early forties. An upper-level executive at a Manhattan office. Brenda is quirky, unfiltered and assertive. She is Orville’s supervisor, and at this moment in her life, she’s lonely, searching for love and romanticizing Orville’s tragic situation with comic consequences. The play is a funny drama, comedic and dramatic skills are equally important.
IAN SANDERS
Male, early thirties to early forties. Ian killed a woman while driving drunk. He’s an alcoholic, who did a terrible thing, but is not a terrible person. He’s attending AA meetings regularly, but he’s depressed, lonely and at a new low as he struggles to figure out how to live his life sober. Ian is gay, but his sexual preference is not obviously apparent, and is a surprise reveal at the end of the play.

FERN HILL

SYNOPSIS: Three couples in their golden years, thick as thieves, are gathered at Sunny and Jer’s farmhouse to celebrate milestone birthdays that span three decades. The foundation of their long friendship is honesty and support – as well as a commitment to the enjoyment of food, wine and laughter. They’re so close that Sunny suggests that they all move in together—to live and work and assist one another as they grow older. Their companionship is put to the test, however, when a marital betrayal is discovered. The bonds of loyalty and truth are explored in this mature comedy. SUNNY
In her mid-sixties. She is a professor of Art History specializing in Italian Renaissance art at a nearby State University. She has been married for thirty-three years to Jer.
JER
Is celebrating his seventieth birthday. He’s a professor of Modern Dramatic literature specializing in the Theater of the Absurd. Jer is a heartbreaker in a Left-Bank existentialist way and looks great in his clothes.
BILLY
Is a week away from his sixtieth birthday. He has been the bass player for the rock group Olly Golly who have been on tour for the last forty-two years. Billy is married to Michiko.
MICHIKO
Met Billy when he winked at her an Olly Golly concert in 1987 and they’ve been together ever since. Michiko is the executive assistant to the Dean of Fine Arts at the University and she’s very good at her job.
VINCENT
Is a well-known painter whose work falls between Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. His paintings are in the collections of art museums around the world. For a number of years he taught painting at the State University but he retired fifteen years ago to focus on his painting. He will celebrate his eightieth birthday in two months. He is married to Darla.
DARLA
Is a photographer and teacher of photography at the University. Darla is now in her late fifties. She and Vincent met at the University thirty years ago, had a torrid affair and have been together ever since.

SYNOPSIS: In this tale inspired by Latino folk lore and mythology, Isadora finds the strength to stand up to her abusive husband, but there is a price she must pay for her courage.
Seeking:
ISADORA
A wife. Barely 20. Latina.
YOLOT
The interloper. In her 20s. Latina.
ROCÍO
A servant. In her 50s or 60s. Isadora’s childhood nurse and nanny, now her housekeeper. Latina.
SEPTIMO
A husband. In his 30s. Uncommonly handsome and charming. Latino.
All actors should be able to speak Spanish.
Theatre’s statement: Age is not as important as the spirit of the actor. We are looking for actors who embody the sense of youth or age needed for each role. Non-traditional casting is encouraged, and actors of color, seniors and performers with disabilities are encouraged to audition for all the plays.
