All actors sing. Instrumental ability is a plus but not required. Doubling is fluid and theatrical.
Ishmael: A bohemian drifter, an outsider. Think “philosophy major who now frequents bars but never drinks.” Our narrator, guide, and anchor — but always questioning. Doubles as various shipmates and ensemble figures.
Ahab: Assumes the role of a Ahab in the re-telling. Part Shakespearean tragic figure, part rock frontman in decline. Charismatic, furious, haunted. Probably wears sunglasses indoors. Doubles as various ensemble figures.
Starbuck: The moral compass...or at least trying to be. Always carrying the weight of responsibility — like a union organizer who also brews artisanal coffee. Doubles as various ensemble figures.
Dickie Stubb: Cheeky, darkly humorous. A whaler with a stand-up’s timing. Emotional and physical range is essential. Anything from a sardonic cook to the sound of a storm. Doubles as various ensemble figures.
Mr. F: Rough, loyal, and always ready to throw hands. Mr. F is all gut and little filter. Doubles as various shipmates and ensemble figures.
Q: Assumes the role of a harpooner in the re-telling, with a poet’s soul and a warrior’s laugh. Speaks in gestures and rhythms. Also plays percussion. Doubles as various shipmates and ensemble figures.
Flint: Assumes the role of a harpooner in the re-telling, a swift and silent type from Martha’s Vineyard — sharp-eyed, sharper-armed, and lightning-fast. Has no time for nonsense but delivers brutal truth in few words. Doubles as various shipmates and ensemble figures.
Ash: Towering, formidable, and grounded like bedrock. Assumes the role of a harpooner in the re-telling – and maybe is the only one who sees the madness coming. Speaks less, observes more, and acts when it counts. Doubles as various shipmates and ensemble figures. Quiet power, physical strength, and a deep stillness. Bass/baritone voice a plus.
Doughboy: Fresh off the bus and not entirely sure this isn’t a whale-watching cruise. Doughboy is sweet, clueless, and eager to please. Great comic instincts, a touch of pathos, and the ability to be both utterly sincere and wildly overwhelmed. Doubles as various ensemble figures.
