On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought together Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley at Sun Records’ storefront studio in Memphis, TN. The man who made it happen was the “Father of Rock ’n’ Roll,” Sam Phillips, who discovered them all. The four legends-to-be united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording session that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.

Seeking, for the original cast of the tour company (all roles are available):

Elvis:

Man, 20s. Seeking actor/singer/guitar player to portray Elvis in his 20s, at the beginning of his career. Actor must be familiar with Elvis’s music and able to play guitar; should sound and look somewhat like Elvis, without being an “impersonator”. In the production, Elvis sings “Memories Are Made Of This”, “That’s All Right”, “Long Tall Sally”, “Peace In The Valley”, “Party” and “Hound Dog”. PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS: Please prepare a brief Elvis Presley song (or a song in that style or from the era), and accompany yourself on the guitar.

Jerry Lee Lewis:

Man, 20s. Seeking an actor/singer/pianist for this role. Jerry Lee Lewis was rock ‘n’ roll’s legendary piano prodigy and celebrated “Last Man Standing”. Performer must be a superb piano player, able to play like Jerry Lee Lewis. Fun, energetic; comic skills a plus. In the production, Jerry Lee sings “Real Wild Child”, “Great Balls Of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”. PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS: Please prepare a brief Jerry Lee Lewis song (or song in that style or from the era), and accompany yourself on the piano.

Carl Perkins:

Man, mid 20s. Seeking actor/singer/guitar player (lead guitar). Carl Perkins was the American pioneer of rockabilly music, and best known for his song “Blue Suede Shoes”. Performer must be an excellent lead guitarist. In the production, Carl sings “Matchbox”, “Who Do You Love?”, “My Babe” and “See You Later, Alligator”. PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS: Please prepare a brief Carl Perkins or Elvis Presley song (or song in that style from that era), and accompany yourself on the guitar. An amp will be provided.

Johnny Cash:

Man, mid 20s. Seeking actor/singer/guitar player to portray Johnny cash at the dawn of his epic career. Actor must be familiar with Johnny’s music and able to play guitar. Tall. Should sound and look somewhat like Johnny, without being an “impersonator”. In the production, Johnny sings “Folsom Prison Blues”, “Sixteen Tons”, “I Walk The Line” and “Riders In The Sky”. Please prepare a brief Johnny Cash song (or song in that style from that era), and accompany yourself on the guitar.

Sam Phillips:

Man, mid 30s. Excellent actor needed. Sam was the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and founder of Sun Records who discovered Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and many others, including Roy Orbison and B. B. King. Towering and charismatic figure in American music. PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS: For those auditioning for this character, sides (a brief monologue) from the show will be provided at the audition.

Dyanne:

Woman, mid 20s. Excellent actor and singer required. Character was an aspiring singer, and Elvis’s girlfriend. Attractive. Great singer with a wide range needed; sings solos and back-up throughout the show. Sings “Fever” in her alto range, and covers the high soprano part of Johnny Cash’s “Riders In The Sky”. In the production, Dyanne sings “Fever” and “I Hear You Knockin’”. PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS: Please prepare a brief song from the era (from the show or not from the show). Bring sheet music in the correct key; accompanist is provided, but may not transpose.

Fluke:

Man, any age. Excellent drummer needed. Some singing a plus. PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS: Please prepare a brief song from the era (from the show or not from the show) to play on the drums, rhythm-section style (drum kit will be provided). Please be prepared to sing as well; you may sing while you play the drums. Bring sheet music in the correct key; accompanist is provided, but may not transpose.

Jay Perkins:

Man, 30s. Carl Perkins’s older brother. Excellent bass player needed. Sings back-up on many songs throughout the evening. PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS: Please prepare a brief song from the era (from the show or not from the show) to play on the upright bass (bass will be provided). Please be prepared to sing as well; you may sing while you play the bass. Bring sheet music in the correct key; accompanist is provided, but may not transpose.
