SYNOPSIS: Hugely successful Franklin Shepard looks at the emptiness and shallowness of his life through years of calculated ambition. Moving backwards in time, he revisits how he got to where he’s at, his estranged closest friends Charlie and Mary, his first ex-wife and his future ex-wife and how he abandoned himself as an artist. Sondheim’s semi-autobiographical musical that is a true American masterwork.
The Zoetic Stage production will be presented with an eleven-person ensemble.
Charley Kringas: A man of or about forty. He starts off a very talented lyricist fighting conventions and ends up a genius, celebrated playwright. Stubborn, reactive and highly intelligent. Any race/ethnicity.

Franklin Shepard: A man of or about forty. He starts off as a gifted composer and songwriter and ends up a powerful film producer. Highly charismatic, ambitious, tragic, jaded. Any race/ethnicity.

Mary Flynn: A woman of or about forty. She starts off an eager writer with a big wide-open heart and ends up a jaded, alcoholic critic. She’s been in love with Franklin since the beginning of their friendship. Mary’s weight fluctuates in the course of the musical. Any race/ethnicity.

Gussie Carnegie: A woman in her early to mid-forties. She starts off as a secretary to a theatrical producer and turns herself into a very famed & larger-than-life stage actress. She marries Franklin out of necessity but winds up really in love with him. Any race/ethnicity.

Beth: A woman in her early forties who starts off as a promising singer/actress transplant from Texas who catches the eye of Franklin - ultimately marrying him. She winds up the wounded but stronger ex-wife of Franklin and the mother of his child. Any race/ethnicity.

Joe Josephson (Track): A man in his late forties/early fifties. He starts off as a successful Broadway producer giving Franklin and Charlie their start. He marries and divorces Gussie. He winds up broke. Will double as other roles. Any race/ethnicity.

Meg Kincaid (Track): A woman in her mid-twenties/early thirties. Will doubles as several roles including Meg who is the new love interest of Franklin. Meg is a rising Hollywood star, full of sex appeal and has her eyes on the ball. Any race/ethnicity.

K.T. / Mrs. Spencer (Track): A woman in her forties. Will double as both K.T., an ambitious journalist-turned-news anchor and Mrs. Spencer, the mother of Beth. Any race/ethnicity.
Mr. Spencer (Track): A man in his forties/fifties. Will double in a myriad of roles including Mr. Spencer, the father of Beth. Any race/ethnicity.
RU (Track): A man in his thirties. RU, a hopeful writer and bartender - youthful and somewhat brazen. Will double as several other characters. Any race/ethnicity.
