BREAKDOWN

MAGNO

SYNOPSIS: Set in 1930 among Filipino migrant farmworkers in California, the piece requires actors who can handle heightened rhythm, ensemble storytelling, humor, physical labor, and emotional intimacy. Strong singing and movement ability are essential. Instrumental ability is a plus. The men function as individual characters, chorus, work crew, band of survivors, and collective memory.

SEEKING

AMADO: Filipino male. 30's-late 40's. Baritone/Tenor. The cook, caretaker, and spiritual ballast of the bunkhouse. Amado understands that food is dignity. A strong character singer with warmth, timing, emotional gravity, and comfort with heightened theatricality if doubling as Dream/Fantasy Clarabelle.

IKONG / FRANCISCO II: Filipino male. Bisaya. 20's-early 30's. Tenor. Silent, observant, mysterious, and watchful. Ikong is a man of few words, but he sees everything. His stillness has weight. A strong ensemble singer/mover with quiet intensity, excellent listening skills, and physical specificity. Facility with Bisaya/Cebuano language or accent work is a plus.

CLARABELLE: White female. 20's. Alto. A white woman from Arkansas who answers Magno's lonely-hearts letters and travels to California after receiving money from him. Clarabelle is tired, hungry, frightened, calculating, and deeply compromised. She is not a simple villain. A strong singer with dramatic range, plainspoken intensity, and the ability to carry difficult moral ambiguity.

THE FOLLOWING ROLES ARE CAST, OR HAVE OFFERS OUT

MAGNO RUBIO - ROLE IS CAST: Filipino male. Baritone/Tenor. A Filipino farmworker who falls in love with a white woman he finds in a lonely-hearts magazine. Magno is small, dark-skinned, physically underestimated, and used to being laughed at. Beneath his comic exterior is a fierce hunger to be seen, loved, and chosen. He is not a fool. Vocal/Physical Requirements: Strong singer with emotional clarity, comic timing, physical expressiveness, and the ability to carry the central emotional arc of the musical.

PEPING - ROLE IS CAST: Filipino male. 30's. Tenor. The narrator and the only man in the bunkhouse with some college education. Peping is observant, literate, careful, and quietly afraid. A strong singer with narration skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to move between direct address and lived scene work.

TASIO - ROLE IS CAST: Filipino male. 30's-late 40's. Baritone. The clown, gambler, charmer, and escape artist of the bunkhouse. Tasio uses humor as currency and as camouflage. Strong musicality, dance ability, quick banter, physical comedy, and sudden vulnerability.

BERTO - ROLE IS CAST: Filipino male. 25-40. Tenor. The tough guy of the bunkhouse: fiercely loyal, quick to anger, and built around masculine pride. His anger is moral, even when it is reckless. A strong singer with physical presence, comic bite, and the ability to shift quickly from joking to threat to tenderness.

KIKO / FRANCISCO I - OFFER OUT ON THIS ROLE: Filipino male. Ilocano. 40's. Tenor. The informal boss of the bunkhouse. Kiko keeps order, tracks crates, manages logistics, and tries to keep the men employed. He is a practical strategist. A strong ensemble singer with command, grounded presence, and the ability to lead rhythmic work.
