NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR:
Welcome to a new day.
It’s not going to be business as usual folks- in the Best. Possible. Way.
We're going to breathe new life into this production of Mamma Mia by reimagining what it could and should look like today. Part of that is having a beautifully diverse cast of storytellers, where we can ground and root the themes of our show in a very real way. No stereotypes of what's always been done. We’re going to pursue real flushed out, multidimensional characters who are on a true journey. All the fun and great songs that we love, anchored in something real, intentional, tangible, and inspiring. For ourselves and our audiences.
I am rooting one of our themes, in the West African word, ‘Sankofa’. A simple translation means to “retrieve” or “go get it”. A more in-depth translation says: “...it is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.” In our show, Donna is on her own personal Sankofa, as well as Sophie. Sometimes, you must go back, before you can successfully move forward.
Where, in your life, do you feel you need to go back and retrieve what’s been lost or forgotten? Who are your “ride or die” people that help you and challenge you to be your most authentic self?
We're also going to redefine what it means to come together as theater artists in the rehearsal process. It’s important to me as we create art together that it is in an atmosphere of mutual respect, safety, and open communication. I want to know what an actor needs to feel safe in the room and what they need to want to stay in the room. My intention is that artists feel protected and supported. I believe that is the most successful way to create the absolute best production that we all can be proud of. Putting the people in the process, first. And most of all, real talk, it’s going to be absolute, FUN! Fun is the most important ingredient. It’s Mamma Mia after all.

SEEKING:
Donna Sheridan – early-mid 40’s, black, mezzo – The owner of the Taverna on the Greek island of Kalokairi; Sophie’s mother. She is the former lead singer of “Donna and the Dynamos”. Honest, straight and hard-working, she is the most grounded and vulnerable of the characters. Provides some of the deepest emotional points in the story, on a personal journey of Sankofa* - a journey “to go back for that which you have forgotten.”
Sam Carmichael – early-mid 40’s, BIPOC, bari-tenor – One of Sophie’s Potential fathers and a wealthy architect (American, Donna’s contemporary). Sam has regretted leaving Donna all his life, and now finds himself divorced, and back in her presence. He is straight-laced, confident and composed. At times he is perhaps a little over-bearing, but he is determined not to mess up the second chance he has been given... a very true and honest character within the chaos. He is on a personal journey of Sankofa* - a journey “to go back for that which you have forgotten.”
