Breakdown

THE GLORIOUS DEATH OF COMRADE WHAT'S HIS NAME - a new musical comedy

SEEKING

(characters listed below and understudies):

  • SEMYON SEMYONOVICH PODSEKALNIKOV (CAST. seeking understudy) - Male, 40s-50s, Db3 to G4. Unemployed dreamer with an overwhelming desire to avoid hard work. Gullible and self-important, his inflated ego gets him into trouble - but his big heart will get him out of it.
  • MASHA (CAST. seeking understudy) - Female, 40s-50s, alto strong belt/mix F#3 to C#5. Semyon’s wife. Caring, practical, and compassionate, she works hard in a factory - and has reached the end of her tether putting up with her husband’s shenanigans.
  • SERAFIMA - Female, 60s-70s, alto G#3 to Bb4 belt, D5 head voice. Masha's mother. Irascible, sharp-tongued, world-weary, protective of her daughter, convinced that life is difficult and unrewarding - until, to her great surprise, she falls madly in love.
  • KATERINA PETROVA - Female, 20s - 40s, G3 to B4. Poet and deep thinker, dissatisfied with life in the Soviet state. One third of the “Trio” that form a chorus to unfolding events.
  • FATHER ELPIDI - Male, 40s-50s, tenor C3 to Ab4. Priest, sensitive and nervous, second member of Trio.
  • PUGACHOV - Male, 40s-50s, baritone G2 to G4. Down-to-earth, dull-witted and burly butcher, third in the Trio.
  • BURKIN - Female, 20s-40s, any vocal part. Soviet policewoman, fanatically devoted to the State, unrelenting in her commitment to all things Soviet. Physically clumsy.
  • ARISTARCH DOMINIKOVICH GOLASHCHAPOV (CAST. seeking understudy) - Male, 40s-60s, tenor Db3 to G4. Shady operator who claims to hate the barbarous Soviet regime, but is actually working for the dictator, driven by a passionate Daddy complex in which he believes he is Stalin’s favorite son. Conniving and charismatic.
  • CLEOPATRA (CAST. seeking understudy) - Female, 30s-50s, Soprano with strong belt/mix A3 to B5. Owner of local bar. Fiercely independent and self-made, she is determined to be a part of the overthrow of the Soviet State, driven by her erotically-charged longing for rebellion.
  • FEDYA PETUNIN - Male, 60s-70s, any vocal part. Wry, tuba player, thinks himself a lothario, but is terrified to lose his tuba and end up in a work camp. Surprisingly, falls in love with a woman his own age. Ability to play tuba a plus. Please submit sample with video submission.
  • DREAM STALIN - Male, 40s-50s, operatic bass preferred - E2 to F#4. Manifestation of Josef Stalin in the mind of another character, whose paternal charm barely conceals a vicious ruthlessness.
