boy from a small farming community in the Midwest. Fun-loving, full of life, patriotic, loyal to his family, and a romantic at heart. He dreams of adventure and enlists in the army, but is torn about leaving his parents, given that they are struggling on their land. Upbeat and optimistic, the young soldier easily makes friends with his fellow GIs. He longs to hear more from his detached mother, but finds a lifeline in writing regularly to his hometown sweetheart. Songs include ‘People Get Ready’, ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water.’ Strong pop rock singer.[LINDA] Female, 20s. Conservative, bright, and inquiring. Living in a small Midwestern town, she clings to family and adores her enlisted sweetheart’s sense of adventure, though fears what war may do to him. After moving to college, she opens herself to a new exciting, stimulating and liberating world on campus. She becomes politicized after watching the horrific images and news reports of the war on TV, and joins an anti-war protest group, where she finds her voice. Songs include ‘Killing Me Softly’, ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’, ‘Nowhere to Run.’ Strong pop rock singer.
[THOMAS] Male, 20s. American marine from Detroit who is burdened with a sense of family duty and living up to rigid expectations of his parents. Dutiful and diligent, a crusader-of-sorts but not as strong as he cares to think. Religious and patriotic, he wants to start a family with his girlfriend when he returns from service. Proud, staunch and conscientious, but the horrors of war and his relationships at home test and shatter his faith. Songs include ‘Give Me Shelter’, ‘We’ve Gotta Get Out of this Place.’ Strong pop rock singer.
[ANDY] Male, 20s. From an urban, working-class family from Chicago. Street-wise, smart and skeptical; brash when he wants to be. He is annoyed and dismayed when drafted as he doesn’t understand why Americans are involved in the War. His curiosity enables him to gain a rapport with the South Vietnamese people. He ultimately returns from Vietnam changed by both the experience abroad and by civil rights and counter-culture movements back home. Inspired by his mother’s involvement in anti-war groups, he considers becoming a protestor himself. Songs include ‘War’, ‘All Along the Watchtower.’ Strong pop rock singer.
