BREAKDOWN

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU

SEEKING:

KAT (Female Identifying. AAPI. 18+ to play high school.) A tough-minded, swerves the norm, aspiring songwriter with an acid tongue. Fierce, fast, quick to clap back - but with a surprising charm and vulnerability that she just might reveal if someone is patient enough to wait it out. Alto with strong rock/pop sensibility and high belt.

BIANCA (Female identifying. AAPI. 18+ to play high school.) Popular, feminine, and perfect, the ultimate (over)achiever: gets great grades, is in nine clubs, and manages to be everyone’s best friend. Is unwilling to allow “imperfection” into her life - like, for example, if she were to allow herself to admit that she’s into girls. Alto/Soprano with strong rock/pop sensibility and high belt.

SHU FEN (THIS ROLE IS CAST) (Female identifying. AAPI. 40s.) The matriarch of the family: serene, strong, traditional. Has a presence and a power that makes her daughters immediately fall in line the second she walks into the room. Her seamless, impenetrable mask conceals an inner fear that she’s not up for the task of single motherhood. Comedic musical theater vibes useful. Soprano with pop sensibility.

CAMERON (THIS ROLE IS CAST) (Female identifying. Open ethnicity. 18+ to play high school.) The gawkiness of someone coming into her body, but with serious James Dean energy. Eliot Sumner vibes. Goes for the gold - on the soccer field and in matters of the heart. Realizes that there’s a vibe with Bianca and willing to do whatever it takes - almost to the point of mania. Alto with strong rock/pop sensibility and high belt.

PATRICK (Male identifying. Open ethnicity. 18+ to play high school.) Is he an extremely cool, socially distant high schooler? Or an international spy whose cover is an extremely cool, socially distant high schooler? A quietly magnetic, mysterious loner who can’t help but be the talk of the school, and always finds himself in detention, whether or not he actually did anything wrong. If anyone actually got to know him, they’d find a wry, charming, goofball with a big heart… but usually he’s cutting class. Bari/tenor with pop sensibility.

JOEY (THIS ROLE IS CAST) (Male identifying. Open ethnicity. 18+ to play high school.) Classic f-boy, faux sensitive, thinks he’s on Def Poetry Jam. Uses his poetry prowess to make girls feel seen and loved, but he’s really just fanning the flames of his ego. Just as soon as you succumb to his gorgeous rhymes and cute sideways baseball hat, he’s out. Tenor with pop sensibility.

MICHAEL (THIS ROLE IS CAST) (Male identifying. Open ethnicity. 18+ to play high school.) President and sole member of Padua’s Gay Straight Alliance. Quick with a read or a c u next Tuesday-y remark. Actually, a really great friend. Strong pop/rock vocals.

MS. PERKY (Female identifying. Open ethnicity. 40s-50s.) High school English teacher by day, erotic novelist… also by day. Invested in her students but also doesn’t take any of it too seriously. Sings well.

MR. MORRISON (THIS ROLE IS CAST) (Male identifying. Open ethnicity. 40-50s.) A hapless, loveable, pathetic shop teacher. Tests out his new (terrible) stand up material as he passes out the power tools.
