Synopsis: RED is a riveting portrait of artist Mark Rothko, a master abstract expressionist who has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art: a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his New York studio at 222 Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. Raw and provocative, RED is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition that explores authenticity, expression, and the choices that define us.
Seeking:
[MARK ROTHKO] — Male, Russian-Jew, late 40s–60. An established, brilliant, and demanding Abstract Expressionist painter at the height of his career. Volatile, intellectual, intimidating, and arrogant, yet deeply insecure about his legacy. He is passionate about art's purpose, fiercely protective of his work, and intolerant of ignorance. A commanding presence with the ability to deliver long, philosophical monologues and portray intense, mercurial moods.
[KEN] — Male, any ethnicity, 20–30. An aspiring painter in his 20s who is quiet, thoughtful, and nervous around Rothko at first. Ken is extroverted and optimistic and an eager student of Rothko's lessons. But Ken is also ambitious, hard-working, and impertinent. He is intelligent and acts as a foil to Rothko’s ego, challenging his artistic and philosophical views.
