BREAKDOWN

SYNOPSIS:

Set in the early 1980s in New York City, Matt and Jeff – two gay medical students – connect while working in a retro-virology lab. When HIV erupts, the fallout upends their relationship as their response to the rising epidemic pushes them along different paths, raising important questions about their values as scientists and doctors and their responsibilities as gay men. A sprawling drama spanning the decade, LOVE AND SCIENCE IN THE TIME OF HIV explores the difficulties of love during a crisis, the realities of scientific progress, and how to maintain hope in the midst of an epic struggle.

SEEKING

:

MATT: Early 20s, male-identifying, gay. A science prodigy who is just starting medical school. An
introvert who values facts above anything else. Starts off as a beacon of innocence and excitement,
someone who is just genuinely excited to learn. As the rise of the HIV crisis continues, he becomes
more and more hardened by the devastating effects of the epidemic. Whereas Jeff expands his
outreach to the community, Matt withdraws and closes himself off from genuine connections, burying
himself in the work. His dedication (and bitterness) continues to this day. LEAD, ANY ETHNICITY.

JEFF/JOE: Mid-20s, male-identifying, gay. JEFF is a fellow medical student and researcher. Brilliant,
kind, charming, he is a people-person. Takes pride in his queer identity. Falls in love with Matt in the
midst of the growing AIDS epidemic. Always makes sure to approach patients with care and empathy
and love, in contrast to Matt’s more cold and scientific approach. Becomes a fierce activist and never
strays from his love and protection of his community. JOE is a Columbia grad student (many years
later) who wants to start an LGBTQ+ grad school group. LEAD, ANY ETHNICITY.

PROFESSOR GOLD AND

OTHER

S: 30s-50s, female-identifying. An assistant professor at Columbia,
studying retro-virology in mice. A brilliant researcher dedicated to her craft. Straightforward,
occasionally sarcastic and witty. She approaches her research with hope and an intention to help
others. SUPPORTING, ANY ETHNICITY.

MELISSA AND

OTHER

S: Mid-20s, Black, female-identifying. Another grad student who joins the lab
a few years after Matt. As a Haitian woman, she is drawn to studying the HIV virus. Starts off a bit
more reserved and timid, but as her friendship with Matt and Jeff grows she becomes the voice of
reason. She can be sarcastic and witty. Overall, just passionate about the work and wanting to help.
SUPPORTING.

STEVE RUBELL AND

OTHER

S: 30s-40s, male-identifying. Former owner of Studio 54, where he
was once Matt’s boss. A man with a big presence and energy. SUPPORTING, ANY ETHNICITY.

NICKY AND

OTHER

S: 30s-40s, male-identifying. A bartender and manager at Studio 54. A former
lover of Matt’s who ends the relationship as Matt enters med school. Tender and caring.
SUPPORTING, ANY ETHNICITY.

GARY AND

OTHER

S: 21, male-identifying. One of the first AIDS patients to arrive at the hospital.
Scared and confused, he just wants to understand what’s happening to him. SUPPORTING, ANY
ETHNICITY.

OFF-STAGE MALE-IDENTIFYING COVERS: 30s-40s, male-identifying. Will cover a combination of all the male-identifying on-stage roles. ANY ETHNICITIES.

OFF-STAGE FEMALE-IDENTIFYING COVER: 20s-40s Black, female-identifying. Will cover a
combination of all the female-identifying on-stage roles.
