MEN ON BOATS by Jaclyn Backhaus

The characters in MEN ON BOATS have historically been cisgender white males. We encourage auditions from people who are not. I'm talking about racially diverse actors who are female-identifying, trans-identifying, genderfluid, and/or non-gender conforming. As an addition, we encourage Native actors to audition.

  • John Wesley Powell - one-armed leader of exhibition.
  • William Dunn - Hunter and Trapper.
  • John Colton Sumner - former soldier and current explorer.
  • Old Shady - Powell's older brother, Civil War vet.
  • Bradley - Lieutenant - Manic with youth.
  • O.G. Howland - Printer and hunter.
  • Seneca Howland - O.G.'s quiet little brother.
  • Frank Goodman - British, so excited.
  • Hall - mapmaker, old soul.
  • Hawkins - The cook.
  • Tsauwiat - A Ute chief (doubles with O.G.).
  • The Bishop - Tsauwiat's wife - Doubles with Seneca.
  • Mr. Asa - a desert settler (doubles with Goodman).

  • Jeanette Rankin - First female congresswoman - 70-80's, feisty, mischievous, vain.

PRELUDE TO A KISS by Craig Lucas

SEEKING:

  • RITA BOYLE (20s–early 30s) – A brilliant, funny, guarded young woman whose skepticism about love is challenged by an unexpected emotional connection.
  • PETER HOSKINS (20s–early 30s) – An earnest, open-hearted romantic whose deep belief in love is tested in ways he never imagined.
  • THE OLD MAN (60s–80s) – A mysterious, fragile, cranky stranger whose brief presence alters the course of the story.
  • DR. BOYLE (50s–60s) – Rita’s pragmatic, loving father who values tradition but ultimately leads with heart.
  • MRS. BOYLE (50s–60s) – Rita’s perceptive, quietly romantic mother who believes in love’s enduring power.
  • TAYLOR (20s–40s) – Peter’s easygoing, good-humored friend who brings levity and grounding perspective. Part will double.
  • TOM - (20's-50's) - bartender, cool and easygoing) Part will double.
  • MINISTER- (any age and gender) - Part will double.
  • AUNT DOROTHY - (40's-60's) - funny and curious. In everyone's business - Part will double.
