BREAKDOWN
Synopsis:
Description: The lascivious Sir Harcourt Courtly visits Oak Hall in the country in order to marry the lovely eighteen-year-old Grace. She had agreed to marry him to fulfill a preordained plan that would allow financial security for her family. He does not know that his son, Young Courtly, is simultaneously wooing the same beauty under the assumed name of Augustus Hamilton. But when Sir Harcourt meets the rumbustious Lady Gay Spanker he falls head over heels in lust. The double courtship, surrounded by a set of brilliantly comic characters, ultimately exposes the falsity of judgements based on money, as well as gleefully lampooning all manner of social eccentricities.
Roles:
• Sir Harcourt Courtly, cultured 57-year-old fop. Vain, lascivious, believes he is God’s gift to women
• Charles (Young) Courtly, 20’s his dissolute son. Charming, bright, and a total liar.
• Dazzle, 20’s/30’ Charles' acquired friend. A charlatan. A con man who delights in the game.
• Max Harkaway, 50’s/60’s the country squire. Benign. Jovial. A good and decent man.
• Grace Harkaway, Max's 18-year-old niece, betrothed to Sir Harcourt. Beautiful, intelligent, unconventional .
• Lady Gay Spanker,30’s/40’s an outrageous horse-riding vibrant force of nature. Eccentric, outspoken creative,
• Mr. Adolphus 50’s/60’s Dolly Spanker, Lady Gay’s ineffectual husband. Sweet, befuddled, and easily swayed.
• Mark Meddle, lawyer 30-50’s. Relentless in his pursuit to sue anyone for anything.
• Pert, Grace's maid 30’s Sharp, does not suffer fools gladly.
• Cool, 30’s Charles' long suffering valet. Takes every foible of his master in stride.
• James (Simpson)* 40’s A butler at Oak Hal. Excellent at his job –what you would expect of an English Butler.
• Martin,* 40’s servant to the Courtly’s.
*The roles of James and Martin may be doubled.
