PREPARATION

Prepare one monologue OR two contrasting monologues – up to 3 minutes total. Please bring a picture and resume, stapled together. No accompanist will be provided.

Black male. At age 26: American actor, ambitious, keen, passionate, optimistic. At age 60: American leading actor, grand, impatient, ferocious, unwell. CAST. Actors will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.

Connie
Jamaican female, any age. Experienced, servant, older than her years and the voice of truth.

Ellen Tree
White female, late 20s. English, a leading actress, talented, motivated, classical but progressive.

Halina Wozneck / Betty Lovell / Margaret Aldridge
White female, 20s-30s. Halina Wozneck: Polish journalist, bright, ambitious, frustrated with her life. Betty Lovell: English actress, self- concerned, not clever but pleasant. Margaret Aldridge: English, wife of Ira Aldridge, plain, solid, trustworthy, Ira’s rock.

Casmir / Henry Forester
White male, 20s. Casmir: German speaking Polish stagehand, inexperienced, low status, likes Halina. Henry Forester: English actor, political, self -interested, ambitious, earnest.

Terence / Bernard Warde
White male, 50s. Terence: English, Ira Aldridge’s valet and dresser, loyal, hard working. Bernard Warde: English, actor, old school, a bit lazy, opinionated, insecure.

Charles Keane
White male, 30s. English actor (son of Edmund Kean), grand but without the talent to support it, suffers from being Edmund’s son.

Pierre LaPorte
White male, mid-30s. French, manager of the theatrer, gay, revolutionary, entrepreneurial.

Han Van Meegeren
Male, 50s. An artist and art dealer determined to prove his worth, now on trial for his life.

Johanna Van Meegeren
Female, 40s. An actress working to free her husband, still discovering her role in a post-war Netherlands.

Joseph Pillel
Male, 30s. A military captain hardened by the war, trying to rebuild his country and make examples out of collaborators.

Boll
Male. A Jewish prosecutor hired to methodically build the case against Han Van Meegeren.

Abraham Bredius
Male, 50s-70s. A distinguished art critic whose reviews tortured a young Van Meegeren, now contributing his expertise to the Van Meegeren trial.

Augustun / Rotke / Judge
Male. Augustun: Van Meegeren’s no-nonsense prison guard. Rotke: A cantankerous art restorer from Van Meegeren’s past. Judge: Presides over Van Meegeren’s trial and is eager to keep the proceedings from becoming a circus.
