BREAKDOWN
Jacob:
Male. The “founder of a whole new nation,” Jacob is the patriarch of a massive clan of wives and children (12 sons and one daughter.) Despite being somewhat elderly, he is still a loving father, especially to his favorite son, Joseph; this favoritism blinds him to resentment of his other sons. Mid-40’s-60’s; Bass-Baritone (could be spoke-sung). Please note that this role will be doubled with Potiphar.
Joseph’s Brothers:
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Naphtali, Issachar, Asher, Dan, Zebulun, Gad, Benjamin, and Judah:
The other eleven sons of Jacob. They become envious of Joseph’s favored position, and team up to dispose themselves of their annoying brother and his prophetic dreams. Three of the brothers sing solos—“One More Angel in Heaven” (a country-western song), “Those Canaan Days” (a faux-French ballad), and “Benjamin Calypso” (a calypso number). Tenor-bass; 20’s-30’s. Please note that two of these men double as the Baker and the Butler.
Pharaoh:
Male. Rameses I, the current leader of Egypt. As Pharaoh is the “King” of his nation, he is modeled on Elvis, the “King of Rock and Roll.” Sexy, loud, and powerful, Pharaoh has an ensemble of cheering fangirls who follow his every move. Mid-30’s-40’s; Baritone. Please note that the actor must be able to do an Elvis Presley impression.
Potiphar:
Male. One of the Pharaoh’s captains of the guard, and an extremely rich man (“one of Egypt’s millionaires”). Despite his wealth and power, he is a kind man who treats his slaves well and deeply loves his wife (unfortunately, she fails to return the favor). Mid-40’s-60’s; Bass-Baritone (could be spoke-sung). Please note that this role will be doubled with Jacob.
Mrs. Potiphar:
Female. A “beautiful but eeeeeevil” woman, she is a seductress in her prime. When Joseph enters her husband’s household, she decides to take him as her lover (despite his own protests and Potiphar’s love for her). Mid-20’s-30’s. Please note that this role will be played by an Ensemble member.
ENSEMBLE:
All must be excellent singers and dancers. There are opportunities for solos (both singing and dancing) among the Ensemble
