Caught between two worlds, Ulysses wrestles with family and faith as he strives to find the place where he can love and be loved — in all his fabulousness. This new musical captures the joy of embodied liberation and the profound power of faith, with a score that soars from the transcendence of gospel to the exhilarating vibrations of house music and pop. Saturday Church boldly asks, Is faith only for the Holy? and, more importantly, Are there any queens in the house?!!!

Seeking

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS: First and foremost, we are seeking performers who are 100% singers first. This is intensely difficult music sung by virtuosic musicians. We are looking for trained singers who have multi-faceted instruments and are capable of carrying a wide range of styles comfortably. If classical singers, must be comfortable with straight tone and gospel sounds. If gospel singers, must be comfortable with legit sounds and straight tone. If musical theater singers, must be able to sing without affectation. Must have at least 3 octaves, read music well and learn quickly. Must be excited by a challenge! We are looking for folks who have distinctive timbres, but also have a capability to timbrally SHIFT. The cast is an assembly of unique individuals, each of whom will be featured as soloists, but who must also sing complex harmony with confidence. We are looking for virtuosic unicorns who know how to sing with their real hearts.

  • ROLE ONE: legit soprano or mezzo [ROLE ON OFFER] - Operatic lyrical soprano first and foremost. Effortless quality, floaty: compelling as legit soprano — as Maria Callas was. Able to sing straight tone and willing to dip in and out of other styles.
  • ROLE TWO: soprano or mezzo [ROLE CAST] - Any style — ideally jazz/gospel forward. Has effortless top notes, and must a capability to be pianissimo in upper ranges.
  • ROLE THREE: mezzo/alto [ROLE CAST] - Any Style, but classical forward. Comfortable singing straight tone and/or in a pop way.
  • ROLE FOUR: mezzo/alto [ROLE CAST] - Any Style, but classical forward. Comfortable singing straight tone and/or in a pop way.
  • ROLE FIVE: soprano or mezzo [ROLE CAST] - Any Style, jazz forward, comfortable belting and possesses a legit sound.
  • ROLE SIX: mezzo or alto [ROLE CAST] - Any Style, jazz or gospel forward, comfortable belting and possesses a legit sound.
  • ROLE SEVEN: mezzo or alto [ROLE CAST] - Any Style, gospel forward, comfortable belting and possesses a legit sound.
  • ROLE EIGHT: countertenor [ROLE CAST] - Able to sing in the soprano range, ideally without operatic affectation. Able to carry R & B type falsetto up high. Sound effortless (i.e., not Frankie Valli).
  • ROLE NINE: operatic tenor [ROLE CAST] - Style malleable and game for singing straight tone, but can carry operatic tenor effortlessly.
  • ROLE TEN: tenor/baritone - Any style, with some high tenor notes, but lower baritone parts are appreciated. Style fluidity a must.
  • ROLE ELEVEN: Tenor or baritone [ROLE ON OFFER] - Any Style, has some high tenor notes, but shines in the baritone range.
  • ROLE TWELVE: Tenor or baritone [ROLE CAST] - Any Style, has high tenor notes, but baritone parts are appreciated.
  • UNDERSTUDY ONE: [ROLE ON OFFER] Covering Roles One, Two and Five.

Show Description

St. Petersburg, 1992: the Soviet Union has collapsed, McDonald’s has risen, and Evgeny, a young man at a loss, stumbles into a job working surveillance with his old friend Dmitri. Their target: Katya, a former pop singer with questionable allegiances and a mysterious past. As their lives riotously intertwine, Evgeny finds himself falling in love and losing his bearings, all while grappling with the taste of freedom (and fast food) along the way. Lauren Yee’s (Cambodian Rock Band, The Great Leap) savvy, off-kilter tale of identity, espionage, and the cost of capitalism makes its New York premiere in this razor-sharp dark comedy.

Seeking

Note: The characters in this play are Russian. Age is very flexible, especially for Evgeny, Dmitri, and Mother Russia. Feel free to embrace the heightened spirit of the show. Within the frame of the play, Evgeny, Dmitri, and Katya speak in standard American accents (to signify they are speaking Russian). Mother Russia (who exists outside this frame) speaks with a Russian accent.

  • MOTHER RUSSIA: Female [any age, to play 50+/ageless]. No-bullshit, effortlessly charming, seen-it-all energy. The embodiment of the soul of Russia.

PUBLIC CHARGE chronicles the challenging education of a twenty-first century American diplomat as she works with scores of other dedicated public servants to deploy humanitarian aid to an earthquake-ravaged Haiti, navigate the roiling politics of immigration, confront the reality of international espionage, and free a wrongly imprisoned American from a Cuban prison. This bracing world premiere by former United States Ambassador Julissa Reynoso and award-winning playwright Michael J. Chepiga is, at its core, about a group of Americans who believe, sometimes against all appearances to the contrary, that their government might actually be a force for good upon the frighteningly chaotic world stage.
