Caught between two worlds, Ulysses wrestles with family and faith as he strives to find the place where he can love and be loved — in all his fabulousness. This new musical captures the joy of embodied liberation and the profound power of faith, with a score that soars from the transcendence of gospel to the exhilarating vibrations of house music and pop. In this “profoundly strange and overwhelmingly beautiful” (New York Times) music-theater event, creator Heather Christian infuses a classical oratorio with a captivating blend of blues, gospel, jazz and soul. Both otherworldly and achingly intimate, the piece surrounds and uplifts audiences, peeling back complex layers of what it means to be alive on both a human and a cosmic scale.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS: First and foremost, we are seeking performers who are 100% singers first. This is intensely difficult music sung by virtuosic musicians. We are looking for trained singers who have multi-faceted instruments and are capable of carrying a wide range of styles comfortably. If classical singers, must be comfortable with straight tone and gospel sounds. If gospel singers, must be comfortable with legit sounds and straight tone. If musical theater singers, must be able to sing without affectation. Must have at least 3 octaves, read music well and learn quickly. Must be excited by a challenge! We are looking for folks who have distinctive timbres, but also have a capability to timbrally SHIFT. The cast is an assembly of unique individuals, each of whom will be featured as soloists, but who must also sing complex harmony with confidence. We are looking for virtuosic unicorns who know how to sing with their real hearts.

St. Petersburg, 1992: the Soviet Union has collapsed, McDonald’s has risen, and Evgeny, a young man at a loss, stumbles into a job working surveillance with his old friend Dmitri. Their target: Katya, a former pop singer with questionable allegiances and a mysterious past. As their lives riotously intertwine, Evgeny finds himself falling in love and losing his bearings, all while grappling with the taste of freedom (and fast food) along the way. Lauren Yee’s (Cambodian Rock Band, The Great Leap) savvy, off-kilter tale of identity, espionage, and the cost of capitalism makes its New York premiere in this razor-sharp dark comedy.
Note: The characters in this play are Russian. Age is very flexible, especially for Evgeny, Dmitri, and Mother Russia. Feel free to embrace the heightened spirit of the show. Within the frame of the play, Evgeny, Dmitri, and Katya speak in standard American accents (to signify they are speaking Russian). Mother Russia (who exists outside this frame) speaks with a Russian accent.

A riveting take on Sophocles’ classic, the play reimagines the story of Oedipus’ daughter Antigone through a bold new lens. Written by award-winning playwright Anna Ziegler, this lyrical epic follows a fiercely independent young woman determined to control her own body in a kingdom ruled by archaic laws that regulate women’s autonomy. It paints a world that is both modern and ancient; a world of lost leaders, hapless cops, and one very righteous daughter on an all-night bender. Drama Desk Award nominee Tyne Rafaeli directs this daring new work about the timeless quest to find your voice.
