Seeking Principal performers for San Deigo REP's upcoming production of IN THE HEIGHTS. Specifically seeking actors who can be San Diego local hires. There are non-AEA roles available as well.
Preparation One uptempo, one ballad (two and a half minutes total) in the style of the show. Can sing from the show.

Character Breakdown
Note: While many of the characters in the musical are identified as "Latino," the production will consider submissions from actors of all ethnicities.
1. Usnavi, Male. Mid 20’s – mid 30’s. The owner of a bodega in Washington Heights.. He dreams of going to the Dominican Republic, his parents' homeland. He is in love with Vanessa. Baritone. Must rap well.
2. Abuela Claudia Female. 60’s. The matriarch of the barrio who knows everybody and is like a grandmother to everyone in the neighborhood. She was moved from Cuba to New York when she was a child. She is the one who looked after Usnavi when his parents died. Must sing well. Mezzo w/ a strong belt.
3. Vanessa Female. Mid 20’s. Latina or African-American. Usnavi's love interest who works at Daniela's salon. Beautiful. Dreams of getting out of the barrio and getting an apartment downtown, but cannot afford it. Strong high belt. Must be a strong singer and dance well.
4. Nina Rosario Female. Late teens – early 20’s. Latina (Puerto Rican).The daughter of Kevin and Camila. Benny’s love interest. She is the first person in her family (and the neighborhood) to go college and everyone in the barrio admires her for it. She is the typical "good girl" and always got along with her parents. However she returns home from Stanford for the summer with some difficult news to share. Must sing very well. Strong belt
5. Benny Male mid 20’s. African American. Works for Nina’s father at Kevin’s Dispatch. Falls in love with Nina. He dreams of opening his own business. Bari-tenor. Must sing and rap very well. Must move well.
6. Sonny Male. Late teens – early 20’s. Latino. Usnavi's sassy, lazy, yet ambitious younger cousin who works in the bodega. The jokester of the Barrio, but also intelligent and thoughtful. Good singer. Must rap.
7. Daniela Female. 30’s. Latina. The outrageous owner of the salon. She is bold and loud but loves to gossip and tease Vanessa, but cares a lot about her employees, Vanessa and Carla, one of her oldest and best friends. Must sing well with a good belt.
8. Carla Early to mid-20’s. Latina. Works at Daniela's salon along with Vanessa, and is Daniela's oldest friend. Very sweet but not the brightest bulb in the lamp. Good singer.
9. Kevin Rosario Male. 40’s. Latino (Puerto Rican). Nina's father, wants to make sure his family has everything they want. He is overprotective of Nina and owns Rosario's Car Service. Must sing well. Baritone.
10. Camila Rosario Female. 40’s. Latina. Nina's mother, married to Kevin. Just wants what is best for Nina. Loves her family and becomes intolerant when communication issues and intolerance arise in her household. Strong singer.
11. Graffiti Pete. Male. Late teens – early 20’s. Any ethnicity. A graffiti artist and friend of Sonny. Usnavi believes he is a trouble-making vandal, but Pete is really a good-hearted artist. Must rap well. Very strong dancer, especially hip hop.
12. The Piragua Guy (ensemble). Latino. 30’s – 50’s. The owner of a small piragua stand. A staple in the neighborhood. Must sing very well. Bari-tenor with strong top notes.
13. Ensemble. Seeking 8 men and 8 women to make up the ensemble cast. Late teens – 30’s. Strong singers and dancers. All ethnicities.
