A world premiere site-specific play in New York City November 2026
SYNOPSIS
Madison is a struggling American novelist who accepts an invitation to a small German town where his work is uniquely celebrated. His host for the month is Peter, an intellectual who leads the town's literary community and is responsible for the German translation of Madison's novel. After a disastrous author talkback event, Madison begins to suspect that Peter is taking advantage of the language barrier in order to manipulate the conversation – and that the translated version of the novel may bear little resemblance to the original.
SEEKING:
Madison - Late 20s-late 30s, any gender, American. Writer of pessimistic novels. Lives in NYC and is visiting a small German town to discover why their work is popular there and nowhere else. Stubborn, full of self-belief and artistic self-righteousness. Always eager to impress.
Peter - 30s, Male, German. An intellectual. Peter presides over the literary community in a small German town and loves being the one with the answers. After an embarrassing response to his initial effort as a novelist, Peter founded a small literary press and began translating American novels into German. Peter wants to create beautiful literary work and be respected for doing so. NOTE: Speaks both English and German, but because of the conceit of the play, the audience always hears him in English. No German accent.
Martha - 30s, Female, German. Works as the small town's primary government worker, its librarian, or the head of its literary society. She is content with her life but is hungry for rich conversation. Martha has a sincere passion for literature and attempts to build community around it. Exudes warmth and intelligence. NOTE: Speaks German, but because of the conceit of the play, the audience hears her in English. No German accent.
Sebastian - Late 30s or older, Male, German. A former professional footballer turned bartender. Gregarious, inquisitive, and cheerfully blunt. Sebastian is not necessarily a troublemaker but enjoys asking questions that may be difficult to answer. NOTE: Speaks both English and German, but because of the conceit of the play, the audience always hears him in English. Sebastian will sometimes speak with a German accent.
Katarina - Female, German, any age. A contrarian. Combative, mischievous and comfortable engaging in conflict without getting angry herself. She forms a strong opinion immediately, but can just as quickly let it go. NOTE: Speaks German, but because of the conceit of the play, the audience always hears her in English. No German accent.
