SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

SETH HOLLY – African American, man, Early 50s. Owner of the boardinghouse, a skilled craftsman. Born of Northern free parents. Has a stability and completeness to his person. Whip smart and a bit territorial.

BERTHA HOLLY – African American, woman, Late 40s. Seth’s wife of 27 years. Caring, conciliatory, and motherly. A strong negotiator and a mighty fine cook. Practical and grounded.

BYNUM WALKER – African American, man, Early 60s. A conjure man, or root worker. Gives off the impression of always being in control; nothing ever bothers him. Lost in a world of his own and unable to swallow any adversity or interference with his grand design. A singer.

RUTHERFORD SELIG – Man, Early 50s. A white man with greasy hair. A door-to-door peddler for the mill towns along the river. He keeps a list of customers as they move about and is known in the various communities as the People Finder.

JEREMY FURLOW – African American, man, Mid 20s. A new resident of the boardinghouse. Gives off the impression that he has the world in his hand and can meet life’s challenges head on. He smiles a lot. Proficient guitar player. Full of the vigor of youth. A lady chaser.

HERALD LOOMIS – African American, man, early 30s. A wanderer traveling the country with his daughter Zonia, searching for his wife. He is unsettled and at times possessed. Seeking to create a new life once his family is reunited, determined not to be haunted by his past. He is unable to harmonize the forces that swirl around him, and seeks to recreate the world into one thing that contains his image.

MATTIE CAMPBELL – African American, woman, 26. A young woman whose attractiveness is hidden under the weight and concerns of a dissatisfied life. On an honest search for love and companionship. She has suffered many defeats in her search, and although not always uncompromisingly, still believes in the possibility of love.

MOLLY CUNNINGHAM – African American, woman, Mid 20s. Fashionable and independent. The kind of girl who everyone wants to be around, makes friends quickly. Finds one man just as good as the other. Charming, leaves a lasting impression on everyone around her.

MARTHA PENTECOST – African American, woman, Late 20s. Herald Loomis’ wife. A Bible carrying member of the Evangelist church. Has survived great tragedy and moved on. A good woman grounded in her faith.

REUBEN MERCER – African American, boy, 10-14. A boy who lives next door. Brazen but lonely. Looking for something to hold onto.

ZONIA LOOMIS – African American, girl, 11. Herald’s daughter. Timid and self-contained, but helpful and polite. Neatly dressed in clothes too small for her growing frame. A singer.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

PATRICIA – Woman, mid-40s-early 50s, an artist and Beth's mother; Jason’s soon-to-be ex-wife. A brilliant painter, she experiences the world through a vivid emotional life. A woman with a great sense of humor, she is currently very concerned about how she's raised her daughter and looking for how to ameliorate the possible damage caused by her and Jason.

JASON – Man, late 40s-early 50s, a financial planner and Beth's father; Patricia’s soon-to-be ex-husband and lover to Katya. Obsessed with his reputation and how he is seen by the world, wants to be the Picture Perfect father. Is looking for a new start with a new partner as his marriage to Patricia has ceased to feel alive to him. Judgmental of Patricia, he is blinded by his own biases, and is fiercely protective of Beth.

MARK – Man, late 40s-early 50s, an attorney, father, husband to Charlene. His own marriage to Charlene has its challenges, and he is determined that no one knows the truth of his family's life. Wants, as Jason does, to appear perfect. A gifted mediator, he is in over his head with Patricia and Jason.

KATYA – Woman, mid-30s, an attorney in Family Law, lover to Jason. Newly made partner at her firm, she is excited about her professional opportunities, and is idealistic about the change she can make in the world. Although she loves Jason, and wants to connect with Beth, she is struggling to balance her work and personal desires.

CHARLENE – Woman, 40s, a housewife and mother; married to Mark. Patricia's close friend. Due to her own struggles in her marriages, she identifies with both Jason and Patricia. Struggling to regain her footing in her own marriage, she has a sophisticated view of what family life and long-term commitment can entail. Smart, self-aware, and has a good sense of humor.

BETH/SHELLEY – Beth, woman, 15. Patricia and Jason’s daughter. Fiercely independent with a rebellious spirit. Wants to be her own person, trying to navigate her evolving relationship with her parents. Shelley, woman, 20s, an experienced waitress. Quick-witted, has waited tables long enough to know how to deal with all sorts of BS from men.

LALA – Black girl, age 15. Artist. “A hard-rock” and “a gem.” She is in the process of self discovery and eager for her first kiss. An exceptional big sister to five-year old Max. The caretaker who longs to be taken care of. She clashes with her mother often but adores her. Prioritizes her one night a week with her father, Jack, over everything. Daughter of Jack and Dot.

DANI – Black boy, age 16. Athlete and aspiring art historian. A young Sidney Poitier. Well-to-do and book smart. He's a gifted student, graduating early from high school. He's definitely in love with Lala but he has physical boundaries. Close relationship to his fraternal twin, Albert, though they are very different people.

ALBERT – Black boy, age 16. Dancer. A lonely kid pretending to be a ladies’ man. Has a difficult relationship with both of his parents, just trying to make it through high school. He doesn't have a goal to work towards yet so he is playful, to a fault.

JACK – Latinx/Latine of Caribbean descent, 30s. Lala’s father. Son of immigrants. Devoted to his daughter. Stressed out cab driver trying his best to be present. He adores his ex, Dot, but they will never be together.

DOT – Black woman, 30s. Lala’s mother. Troubled, haunted. A person you’d want to paint. She loves her children, but life is difficult. This is not where she had envisioned she would be. She's trying her best.

NEIGHBOR – Black man. Nosy, humorous, wise.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

CLYDE – Woman, any ethnicity, 30s-40s. Owner of the sandwich shop. The gravel in her voice betrays a life of cigarettes and whiskey, a life lived with gusto and no apology. A businesswoman who won't put up with any of her employee's bullshit. She's tough, not nice, not willing to bend. Has an edge and grit. Not a dreamer, lives firmly in reality, doesn't believe things can be better than they are. Ex-con who only hires ex-cons, she gives them a chance.

MONTRELLOUS – Man, Black, 40s-50s, wise beyond his years, head chef of Clyde's. Nonchalant confidence, effortlessly smooth. Has ambitions for the sandwich shop and what he could do with it if Clyde let him. Believes he has the savvy and skill to make this business thrive. Sees sandwich making as an art form, a spiritual practice. A source of inspiration for his co-workers.

RAFAEL – Man, Latinx/Latine, late 20s. Gives playboy attitude, though his game is a little lame. Puts up a tough guy front, but inside he's sensitive. A romantic, loves with every part of his body. Searching for his purpose. Does the most for the people he loves, wears his heart on his sleeve and often gets hurt for it. Deeply admires Montrellous and is in love with Letitia.

LETITIA – Woman, Black, late 20s. Has a fire inside her, not afraid to turn up the attitude. Would do anything for her daughter. Fiercely protective of the people she cares about. Breadwinner of her family, feels the pressure of the world on her shoulders. She feels stuck, like she's constantly doing damage control and never moving forward.

JASON – Man, White, late 20s. Moody. White supremacist tats on his face. Somewhat fresh out of jail and new to the sandwich shop. Keeps his head down, doesn't want any trouble with anyone. Has let his anger get the best of him in the past. Working on getting past his mistakes of the past, has self-isolated to try and deal with it
