BREAKDOWN

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Your audition should be filmed in front of a clean background, with no backlighting, limiting ambient noise as much as possible. If using an iPhone, the video should be shot in horizontal NOT vertical format.

Please prepare a brief monologue no longer than 2 minutes in length.

PLEASE NOTE: This play discusses sexual assault, power, belonging and the body. The play is a comedy with nerve endings. The characters participate in several self-defense exercises and a consent workshop. A willingness and openness to move is essential.

SEEKING:

[DIANA] 18 years old, Mexican-American, She/Her/Hers. Contrarian. Biting. Tough exterior protects tender insides. Freshman in college, old soul, grew up quickly, including being sexually active very early. Moves quickly. Decisive. Resents authority, wants knowledge. Won’t be underestimated.

[SUSANNAH] 6 years old, Black, Latine, MENASA, Indigenous, or AAPI, she/her/hers, a young child of color who makes a wish.

NIKKI: ROLE CAST. 18+ to play 20 years old, Black, Latine, MENASA, Indigenous, or AAPI. She/Her/Hers. Wallflower with a vivid inner world. She's quiet and clocks everything. Over the course of the class, she begins to find her strength and her boldness catapults her to danger.

ANDY: ROLE CAST. 18+ to play 21 years old, White, He/Him/His. Varsity athlete and leader in his fraternity. Earnestly eager to end rape culture and unpack the man box. He tries to use the right words and be sensitive to others, he really tries.

MOJDEH: ROLE CAST. 18 years old, Iranian-American, She/Her/Hers. Just got to college and trying on new selves. Desperate to lose her virginity and get into a sorority. She will do anything to be wanted. Observes others to know what’s cool.

EGGO: ROLE CAST. 18+ to play 20 years old, Black, Latine, MENASA, Indigenous, or AAPI, He/Him/His. Can’t wait to not be 20 anymore. He’s pretty confused by consent culture and terrified of rejection. He joined the frat to have friends, they’re ok – but it’s nice to have a group of people think he’s funny.

KARA: ROLE CAST. 18+ to play 21 years old, Black, Latine, MENASA, Indigenous, or AAPI, She/Her/Hers. Sisterhood chair of the sorority and naturally high status. Susannah’s best friend. Her humor and cool are so effortless and laser sharp that you just might believe her when she says she doesn’t care. Note: This role involves onstage fight choreography, movement and combat experience a plus.
