BREAKDOWN
SEEKING:
Also seeking principal off-stage standbys for these roles.
HERCULES: Young, big-hearted, and ambitious, Hercules longs to help others and yearns to belong, but he feels lost and out of place. He sets out on a journey to find himself and ultimately finds a support system and community in the process. Hercules is confident, charming, and bold, racing into danger to become a “hero”, while also having moments of vulnerability, insecurity, and naiveté. Conveys incredible strength and stature, occasional swagger, and tender moments as he falls for Meg and supports his community. Huge, natural-sounding bari-tenor voice, capable of sustaining a soaring high G, and the capability to go higher at least in mix. Has tremendous control, and is able to negotiate a gentle, sweet sound as well.
MEG: An independent woman who can fight for herself. Cunning, cynical and smart. Underneath her tough-as-nails exterior, she has a kind but damaged heart. Having been burned before, Meg is slow to trust, hiding behind her wit and spunk. But when she falls for Hercules, she allows her real self to show. She will do anything to support him and the community, proving herself to be loyal and loving. At times, needs a big, brassy sound, at others, a natural lyric sound. Can hit a low G as well as belt a C, with a very strong mix at least to an E. A strong singer with a good ear.
HADES: A Disney Villain if there ever was one. Out to get his brother (Zeus), his Nephew (Hercules) and take over the world, he sees only world domination and does not care if he must burn down everything in his path to get there (literally – his hair is made of flames). A fiery temper, a quick wit, and endless exasperation for his two bumbling cronies. Sarcastic beyond measure. Has excellent comedic timing and larger-than-life stage presence. Very strong R&B bari or bari-tenor to a sustained high A.
PHIL: Phil served as the famous trainer of many great heroes, but gave up that life, becoming washed up and forgotten. Jaded and tired, it is Hercules’ endless energy and youthful spirit that reminds Phil of his own greatness and his passion for helping others. Phil is an inspiring, big-hearted mentor, who remains loyal to Hercules every step of the way. With humor and a few cups of sarcasm, Phil guides our hero on his quest and along the way, finds joy in his own life too. Bari or bass-bari. Strong character voice. Sings up to a strong F#, but only needs to sustain an E.
THE MUSES: CLIO, TERPSICHORE, CALLIOPE, MELEPOMENE, and THALIA. Divas of deliberation, Goddesses of the arts and Proclaimers of heroes. A literal Greek Chorus, these outspoken, all-knowing, and enthusiastic songstresses narrate the journey of Hercules through song, wit, and humor. Characters require the ability to maneuver around tight, complex harmonies and strong command of movement, shape and style. All have very, very strong gospel voices, with full ranges.
PAIN: One of Hades’ minions, who are incapable of doing anything right. True to his name, Pain repeatedly injures himself and complains in discomfort. Pain and Panic fear Hades’ and follow his commands, but unintentionally botch each task he asks them to complete as they aren’t very bright. Anything they touch descends into pure chaos. Has good comedic timing. Strong character voice, capable of holding harmonies.
PANIC: One of Hades’ minions, who are incapable of doing anything right. True to his name, Panic is nervous, anxious, and constantly panicked about something. Pain and Panic fear Hades’ and follow his commands, but unintentionally botch each task he asks them to complete, as they aren’t very bright. Anything they touch descends into pure chaos. Has good comedic timing. Strong character voice, capable of holding harmonies.
