NAATCO’s mission is to assert the presence and significance of Asian American theatre in the United States, demonstrating its vital contributions to the fabric of American culture. We present the following repertory:
The listed gender identity is the gender identity of the character. When the role will be cast with an actor of a different gender identity, this is noted.
Henry IV / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Asian American, male, reads under 30 — bookish, avoids conflict, aspires to a life of prayer and meditation.
Margaret / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Asian American, female, reads mid-20s to mid-30s — ambitious, passionate, hungry, highly intelligent and strategic; begins as a young bride and grows into a ruthless warrior.
Humphrey of Gloucester / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Asian American, reads over 50 — a savvy politician, accustomed to running the show, a strategic negotiator and manager of the country’s political apparatus. His belief that the systems of government he is accustomed to still stand blinds him to the treacheries of a younger generation.
Talbot / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Asian American, male, reads over 50 — a national military hero, noble and courageous, the greatest warrior in the country.
Somerset / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Asian American, reads in his 30s or 40s — privileged and proud of it, of a noble lineage and eager to maintain his superiority, a scion of great wealth and power.
Warwick / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Asian American, reads anywhere from 30s to 40s — a courageous soldier and also a savvy political operator, driven by the loyalty of his friends; a warrior who will fight and maneuver bravely to advance a cause he believes in. Capable of inspiring those he supports.
Edward of York / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Asian American, male, reads anywhere from 30s to 40s — physically powerful and brutish, toxically masculine; in a gang of four brothers, he’s the archetypal eldest son; described by others as “wanton.”
Richard of Gloucester / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Asian American, male, reads 20s to 30s — occupies a body that has caused the world to brand him “monstrous,” has channeled his alienation into malevolence and ruthless ambition, feels no obligation to any human other than himself (including his own brothers), willing to do anything necessary to achieve dominance.
Richard Plantagenet / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Male, reads 40s to 50s — ruthless and methodical, feels his family has been unfairly sidelined and will meticulously climb and maneuver to achieve political dominance; a warrior but also incredibly politically savvy, deeply ambitious, destined to be the patriarch of a dynasty.
Suffolk / as cast - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Asian American, male, reads anywhere from 30s to 50s — a dashing Sir Lancelot, politically savvy and also romantically attuned; a magnet to the opposite sex and willing to use this magnetism for his own gain.
Clifford / as cast - CAST. Asian American, male, reads 20s to 30s — a noble soldier who experiences trauma and grief that transform him into a vengeful killer. Courageous and heroic on the battlefield, impressionable, irrevocably changed by the experience of war.
Joan la Pucelle / as cast - Asian American, female, reads early 20s — solemn and driven by a devout calling; fervent for her cause, a warrior.
Bedford / as cast - Asian American, female, reads over 50 — a senior military leader of extraordinary bravery and accomplishment; noble and patriotic.
Bishop of Winchester / as cast - THERE IS AN OFFER OUT FOR THIS ROLE. Asian American, any gender identification, reads over 50 — a conniving prelate, power-hungry, engages in devious machinations to consolidate power.
Prince Edward / as cast - Asian American, male, reads early 20s — noble and brave, a young soldier eager to prove himself; courageous.
Jack Cade / as cast - THERE IS AN OFFER OUT FOR THIS ROLE. Asian American, male, reads 40s to 50s — a rabble-rouser, capable of stirring up crowds to action; at times outrageous and ambitious but not acquainted with the nuances of political maneuvering, a bit of a con man, able to harness aggressive, violent populism and carnival-barker energy.
