Set in New York City in the 1930’s.

All roles are available:

JOE BONAPARTE – E-M20’s. Italian-American. Sensitive, bold, anguished and proud, he’s a gifted young man who’s torn between pursuing a career as a classical violinist and earning big money as a successful prize-fighter. We see him grow from a young man with a deeply poetic soul to an ambitious killer in the ring, who won’t let anything stand in the way of his success. Thin skinned and brash, he wants to be taken seriously at home, in the boxing ring and with Lorna who he falls for. As a boxer, he relies more on his smarts than on power. He’s a young man with enormous dreams, torn between spiritual/artistic ideals and a lust for fame and money.

MR. BONAPARTE – L40’s – 60’s. Widowed father to Joe, Anna and Frank, an Italian immigrant of modest means. The owner of a very small grocery store, his one wish for Joe is to pursue his musical talent and become a great violinist. His love for his son is enormous and he ardently believes that Joe will follow the values he’s taught him. Although he wants Joe to follow his heart, he’s devastated by his choices.

LORNA MOON – L20’s – E30’s. Whip smart, attractive, tough, seductive, cynical and frank, she is able to handle any circumstance and any man. Her tough exterior is born of necessity more than choice, and beneath all that armor is a vulnerable woman with a hungry heart who’s searching for her own happily ever after, even though she ultimately feels undeserving of it.

TOM MOODY – 35 – 45. Fight manager, who takes on Joe as a client. Sexy, charismatic, quick witted and at times crude, he strives for success under his own terms. Both practical and volatile, he is hungry to find the next big thing so that he can make enough money to divorce his wife and marry his longstanding mistress Lorna Moon with whom he is very much in love. He’s a smart operator, who’s been around the block.

SIGGIE – L20’s – L30’s. Married to Mr. Bonaparte’s daughter Anna. A cab driver, insatiably in love with his wife and striving to live life to the fullest despite all the onslaughts that life presents him. He brashly and passionately speaks his mind so he and Anna often find themselves in spirited battles. His aspirations are simple: run his own taxicab business and start a family. Like all good cabbies, he’s a real wise ass with opinions about everything.

ANNA BONAPARTE – M20’s – E30’s. Joe’s sister. Siggie’s wife. Buxom, energetic, good-natured, no-nonsense and tumultuously in love with her husband.

ROXY GOTTLEIB – L30’s – 50’s. Prize fighting promoter who sponsors Joe. Always concerned about making a profit, he doesn’t have much patience for Joe’s complicated situation and gets infuriated when he feels he is not operating at his full potential. Insensitive, impatient, clueless when it comes to reading people. He’s a charismatic and big personality.

TOKIO – 40’s – 60. Moody’s trainer. Respectful, intuitive, and sympathetic to Joe’s needs, his primary goal is to help Joe realize his potential as the great fighter he thinks he can be and to do so cleanly and fairly. Quiet, intelligent, skilled, he understands his job.

EDDIE FUSELI –30’s - 40’s. Infamous gambler and gunman. Shady, intimidating, manipulative thug. A bad piece of business. Dangerous and seductive, he knows how to appeal to Joe’s ambitions.

MR. CARP – 50’s – 70’s. Friend and neighbor of Mr. Bonaparte who owns a local candy and stationery store. Philosophical, a bit world-weary, ultimately sympathetic. A self-made man who’s spent a lifetime working hard.

FRANK BONAPARTE – L20’s – 30’s. Joe’s older brother. A union organizer for the Congress of Industrial Organizations. Intelligent, observant and clear headed, a straight arrow with a soul as practical as Joe’s is poetic. He cares deeply for his younger brother.

PEPPER WHITE – L20’s – 30’s. A boxer, considered an old-timer in the fighting game. Ignorant, cocky, self-assured trash talking, he tries to intimidate Joe.

MICKEY – M30’s – 60’s. Pepper White’s trainer/manager. Does his best to keep Pepper’s ego and philandering ways from getting the better of him.

CALL BOY – E20’s. Responsible for telling the boxers in the locker room who’s next up to fight.

SAM – works with Pepper White.

DRAKE – 40’s – 50’s. 20 years in the newspaper game. Sportswriter who comes to interview Joe before a big match.

LEWIS – Another Sportswriter.

DRISCOLL – Comes to inform Joe and his companions about Baltimore Chocolate Drop’s death.

BARKER – Baltimore Chocolate Drop’s Manager.
